Played in the Capital City, but not a classic

Little Rock — It will be a long trip back to Portales for Eastern New Mexico and first year Head Coach Mark Ribaudo after taking a 51-0 beating at the hands of the University of Central Arkansas on Thursday night.

Not much went right for the Greyhounds starting with the first play from scrimmage, a UCA fumble recovered by the Hounds. The play was negated due to an offside penalty.

Coming into the game after narrowly escaping with a seven point win last year on the road to ENMU, the defense was one of the biggest questions for the Bears. But the defense answered those questions.

Yes, they can stop the option. Yes, they are very fast.

And apparently they can force turnovers. ENMU fumbled five times, losing three, and quarterback Michael Benton’s fourth pass of the game was intercepted by Isaac Hendrix.

Jacob Ford was named the defensive player of the game with four tackles, one sack and two forced fumbles.

Offensively the Bears cruised from the second “official” play of the game. Chris Reil found Aaron Fairooz on his first two pass attempts, the second a 43-yard play-action pass that left Fairooz without a defender within 10 yards.

The second touchdown of the game appeared to be the a very similar play except that Reil threw it to the short receiver, tight end Austin Cade. Cade made a spectacular run to get inside the ten but then fumbled the ball. ENMU’s luck didn’t change here as wide receiver Ben Faires was in the right place to scoop and score from about the one yard line. Cade was upset with himself after the play, but got his revenge with three big hits on special teams and finally reaching the end zone in the third quarter on a four yard pass from backup quarterback Nathan Brown.

Both quarterbacks had efficient games and combined to finish 17-for-23 with four touchdowns.

The rest of the backfield was also solid. Kentrel Rogers picked up where he left off last season with another 100-yard game. Willie Hopson returned from a year off and finished with 81 yards on only nine carries, an average of nine yards per carry. Two end-arounds, a hand full of quarterback scrambles and some powerful straight up-the-gut runs by Derrick McKenzie totaled up 235 total yards rushing for the Bears. Both Hopson and Rogers scored touchdowns in the game.

Michael Norvell set the career record for receptions at UCA with his fourth catch of the game. Norvell replaced Draylon Galloway atop the list with 174 catches. He also led the team in receptions and yards where’s he’s third on the career list.

Big Bears in the Rock come away with easy win

Final score 51-0… *not 52

I heard several times “either we’re really fast, or they’re really slow”…

Some stats for you:

  • Passing offense: ENMU 1, UCA 318
  • Fumbles: ENMU 5-3, UCA 1-0 (resulted in a TD)
  • Both teams had one INT
  • The Bears kicked off 9 times. ENMU only once… to start the game.
  • Reil’s #’s—— 11-15-1 for 227 yards, 3 TDs
  • Brown’s #’s— 6-8-0   for 91 yards and 1 TD
(Brown appeared to intentionally throw an incompletion near the end of the game. But I could be wrong on that.)

As has been mentioned Norvell got his four catches to set the career record and then headed to the bench after getting a good ovation. He then iced down his knee. He led the team in catches and yards (68) as 9 bears had receptions in the game. He wasn’t able to get into the endzone though.

Our kickoff coverage was probably the biggest weakness I saw.

The greyhounds had only one opportunity to score, and the WR completely dropped a WIDE-OPEN ball that would have resulted in a TD.

After watching the game it was one of those times when you don’t know if we were “that good” or if they were “that bad.”

The only injury that I really noticed was to WR Brandon Kennemer.  It appeared he had a high ankle sprain. Isaac Hendrix about knocked himself out a couple of times. And Josh Cade had his face mask ripped off his helmet, only held on by the top of it- personal foul ENMU.

Austin Cade, yes there is a relation, had a heck of a game and if he didn’t fumble, probably would have been the player of the game for UCA. His run on the play of his fumble was incredible and he had three big special teams tackles, and I mean big as in powerful.

Late addition: Jacob Ford, selected as the defensive player of the game, led the team with four tackles, had one sack and forced two fumbles. I’d say he deserved it.

Volleyball gearing up for tough weekend

Junior Tristen McNeal spikes the ball past UAFS players in Monday’s scrimmage.

The challenge ahead for the ’05 volleyball team will be to finally break the 10-year losing season streak. The start of this season will be a big test.

“As far as regional rankings go,” first-year Head Coach Steven McRoberts said, “this is very important.”

Coach Steven McRoberts takes over a program eager for a winning season.

The Sugar Bears first weekend will be against the fourth through seventh ranked MIAA teams. That may not sound like much, but the top three teams in the conference are ranked second, seventh and 18th in the preseason poll.

“Number four in that conference will be no slouch,” McRoberts said. “A smart first year coach would have probably picked an easier first weekend. I’m expecting us to do well.

“My philosophy is to use the early games to prepare you for the conference. I’d rather take lumps early than in the conference.”

Bear Backers Notes

  • They announced an attendance of around 100. I understand that several of those were coaches, but the room couldn’t have held many more. In fact, I had to sit behind a column and couldn’t see a thing at the front of the room.
  • Coach Kissel was introduced and gave a very brief speech. His wife Julie was also in attendance.
  • Steve East and Daryl Walsh were full of jokes. Steve announced that the first Clint Conque show will air this Sunday at noon- not a joke
  • Coach Conque introduced the four new assistants- more on this later.
  • There were a few lighthearted moments of the meeting—
Paraphrased Conque: Let me introduce Hud Jackson. He’s my brother-in-law so be nice to him. (Then proceeds to say) Cause I sleep with his sister!
  • Comments on camp: very hard, very up tempo, very physical practices.
  • Comments on defense: “I feel we are in shape, but we won’t know until Thursday night what kind of game shape they are in… I like our defensive team… We’re longer, more athletic. I think we are faster, stronger. I like our length, our speed. We’re more athletic at linebacker.”
  • Comments on offense: Offense is a little beat up. Fairooz is probable. Ross out 3-4 weeks. Norvell had an MRI on his knee Thursday that was inconclusive. He hasn’t practiced in a week. At best [Norvell] is questionable for Thursday.
  • Comments on ENMU: Seven consecutive winning seasons. Very hard-nosed tough football team. Return seven starters on offense, but only one on defense. But 12 of their top 13 backups from a year ago have moved up.
  • Both teams will stay in LR on Wednesday. The team will tour the Clinton Library. A few players will head over to Arkansas Children’s Hospital. And Wednesday night, they will have a walk-through.
  • Conque on attendance: Let’s put 15-20,000 in the stands.
  • At the end when questions were asked for, the only question asked was from the very back of the room and directed at Coach Cooley. The question was simply: DID OUR NEW OFFENSIVE COORDINATOR CALL THE LAST PLAY OF THE GAME FOR TECH LAST YEAR? If you think back, that one play could have won the game for the Wonderboys, but the ’boys were stopped by UCA’s defense on the goalline. The crowd got a good kick out of the question. Conque’s response was simply: Welcome to UCA, Cooley!

Preseason Polls Released

The 2005 NCAA Division II preseason soccer polls have been released. After finishing at #7 last season with a 11-6-3 record, UCA’s men’s team again finds themselves ranked in the top 25. After being picked to finish second in the Gulf South Conference by its coaches, coaches around the country have placed the Bears in the #8 spot.

(Oddly, the University of West Florida, the pick to win the GSC, is not listed among the top 25 teams. UWF had to cancel its 2004 season due to hurricane damage.)

The Bears begin the season four spots behind the University of North Carolina-Pembroke. The Braves defeated UCA in the NCAA quarterfinals last November by a score of 1-0. UNCP’s lone goal was scored by Sascha Görres, the tenth player selected in the United Soccer League’s draft earlier this year. It was the second trip to the NCAA tournament for the Bears and the first under Coach Chad Flanders. In Flanders first two seasons, his team has finished with 11 wins each.

UCA will have to replace three of their top five point scorers from a year ago, and the roster changes have been abundant. There are 20 new faces listed for this season.

After finishing with a program best 11-6 record in 2004, the women’s team was not listed in the preseason poll. UWF’s women’s team at #23 was the only representative of the GSC in the women’s poll.

Day 1, Getting started

As anyone else would say, I thought it was a typical first practice. Some mishandled snaps, a little bit of yelling by the coaches and once even by the players, a lot of high energy shown by the coaches.

I was standing by the wide receivers during some of their drills and newbie Chris Smith (#88) ran very hard and seemed to put forth the most effort. Conque seemed to call Brandon Payne‘s name several times in a way that sounded as if he expects a lot from him. Payne also took some time on special teams as a punt returner. The big three (Norvell, Faires, Fairooz) looked good as usual. Reil got yelled at a little during some drills, but after one offense-only play, I believe, he did the yelling. It seemed to be a good thing- leadership. It’s been said many times that Reil has worked hard this offseason, but I can see that he is in excellent physical shape.

The Dbacks were on the far side of the practice field for most of the day, so I didn’t see much of them. But, someone correct me if I’m wrong, but I don’t remember Cangelosi during the offense-defense drills. I could have just been paying more attention to the offense than defense. I wish I could have seen more from the transfer DEs and LBs, but with no pads/contact, it’s really hard to get a feel except through little drills.

I really enjoyed watching Cooley during practice. He was always running around, yelling positive and negative comments- one time saying, it’s all right, that’s why it’s the first day of practice.

It was fun to watch. I think the “usual” folks were out there, although I wouldn’t consider myself one of them. Probably a crowd (total, not necessarily at one time) of about +-30. Two Conway High players, several of their coaches, and quite a few fathers who brought their kids out! I wish I could watch every day.

Countdown says 20 days, 10 hours, 5 minutes!
