Bear Backers Notes
- They announced an attendance of around 100. I understand that several of those were coaches, but the room couldn’t have held many more. In fact, I had to sit behind a column and couldn’t see a thing at the front of the room.
- Coach Kissel was introduced and gave a very brief speech. His wife Julie was also in attendance.
- Steve East and Daryl Walsh were full of jokes. Steve announced that the first Clint Conque show will air this Sunday at noon- not a joke
- Coach Conque introduced the four new assistants- more on this later.
- There were a few lighthearted moments of the meeting—
Paraphrased Conque: Let me introduce Hud Jackson. He’s my brother-in-law so be nice to him. (Then proceeds to say) Cause I sleep with his sister! - Comments on camp: very hard, very up tempo, very physical practices.
- Comments on defense: “I feel we are in shape, but we won’t know until Thursday night what kind of game shape they are in… I like our defensive team… We’re longer, more athletic. I think we are faster, stronger. I like our length, our speed. We’re more athletic at linebacker.”
- Comments on offense: Offense is a little beat up. Fairooz is probable. Ross out 3-4 weeks. Norvell had an MRI on his knee Thursday that was inconclusive. He hasn’t practiced in a week. At best [Norvell] is questionable for Thursday.
- Comments on ENMU: Seven consecutive winning seasons. Very hard-nosed tough football team. Return seven starters on offense, but only one on defense. But 12 of their top 13 backups from a year ago have moved up.
- Both teams will stay in LR on Wednesday. The team will tour the Clinton Library. A few players will head over to Arkansas Children’s Hospital. And Wednesday night, they will have a walk-through.
- Conque on attendance: Let’s put 15-20,000 in the stands.
- At the end when questions were asked for, the only question asked was from the very back of the room and directed at Coach Cooley. The question was simply: DID OUR NEW OFFENSIVE COORDINATOR CALL THE LAST PLAY OF THE GAME FOR TECH LAST YEAR? If you think back, that one play could have won the game for the Wonderboys, but the ’boys were stopped by UCA’s defense on the goalline. The crowd got a good kick out of the question. Conque’s response was simply: Welcome to UCA, Cooley!
