Media Day Stories

If you want to know what the players are planning to do after graduation, this is your story I guess:
Bears looking toward leadership as key for success

McCollum’s Column: Bears have wide range of goals after football is over

“I see a lot of leadership in (the senior class),” said Conque, who is entering his 12th season with the program, Wednesday during Media Day activities. “We have seniors at virtually every position. The only one really is the secondary, which is a concern, but I like what I’ve seen out of this senior class…
“We’ve got a lot of team speed, especially at the wide receiver position,” Conque said. “We’re about as deep there as we’ve ever been since I’ve been here. We also have the chance to stretch the field more than we’ve ever been able to.”

Media Day and Fan Open House

Today at 2pm is the start of another busy day for the football team and coaches. The media will be around until after Coach Conque has a sit-down interview at 2:45. (Sidenote: I’ve been to a few UCA media days, and I really like the idea of the interview session. Seems more “professional.”)

But for us fans, there’s our own chance to get to meet with players and coaches tonight on the new turf at 6:30. From the Sports Information office:

  • The first 300 fans will receive free appetizers from JJ’s Grill and Chill and free “Fear the Stripes” T-shirts.
  • An official ribbon-cutting by the Conway Chamber of Commerce will take place at 6:45, followed by remarks from Conque and Dr. Brad Teague, UCA’s director of athletics.
  • The Bears’ new Nike uniforms will be unveiled, as well as the new design for the season tickets.
  • Conque will also introduce his senior class and his coaching staff.
  • Kids will be able to compete in 40-yard dash contests for prizes on the new turf following the official ceremony.

So, they are trying to make this a big event and even reward you with food and Bear gear. Load up the kids and take them to run 40-yard sprints. It’s been so hot lately that they need to get out of the house anyway!

Parity rules in Southland

We’ve been playing Southland schools since 2006 (just SFA and Sam Houston that year, both wins by the way). In our five years we lost to:

  • Northwestern State (2007, 2010)
  • McNeese State (2007, 2009)
  • Nicholls State (2008)
  • Sam Houston State (2009, 2010)
  • Stephen F. Austin (2009, 2010)
  • Southeastern La. (2009)
  • Texas State (2009)

Obviously most of those losses came in 2009 during a disappointing 2-5 conference season. But, if you count those teams up, we’ve lost to everybody in the conference now (except Lamar who we haven’t played yet).

Today’s story in the Advocate
gives some quotes from the coaches on going through the league:
…five teams received at least one first-place vote, and as Conque and other coaches noted, the race for the Southland title sometimes resembles a free-for-all.

While I might agree that there are no easy games, there have definitely been two or three teams at the bottom each year. We were one of those in 2009. Northwestern finished 2009 winless and we were the first victim of their four-game SLC win streak last season. I’d argue that some/most of it’s certainly coach speak, but there were three schools that finished in the middle of the pack at 4-3 last season. We were one of those school, and were very likely one win away from the playoffs. So, maybe there is something to this parity thing?
