This week we have a bye week.

But next week we have the conference favorite in Sam Houston coming to the Stripes. I'll be observing their next game with Nicholls State to see what happens in that game. If any of you have any observations please post them here.

Massey Ratings dated 9-16 has UCA winning chance at 53%.

Last year the game was over by the end of Q1 due to Bear turnovers and SHS big plays. I know it's easier said than done, but we need to play mistake free, be able to run the ball and limit their big plays. Their QB and skill guys are excellent and they may have the best defensive lineman in the country.

If Bears play well, this will be an epic battle at Estes.

Sammy has the #2, 3, and 4 WRs in the conference stats-wise. The #2 QB also...who really could be #1 but they've only played 2 games so far. This is going to be TOUGH.

Interesting stat:

Sam Houston has played Richmond and PV A&M so far:

Sam Houston gets 552 yards of offense a game.
Sam Houston allows 551.5 yards of offense a game.

They've had a couple of defensive injuries in the first two games but those players are back.

I believe Sammy is favored by 12 over Nicholls this week.

I'm not sure Nicholls won't give them much more of a fight than they expect. Looking at the way Texas A&M struggled against Nicholls and the Prairie View A&M comparisons, it looks like Nicholls can hold their own this year.

I guess it all comes down to matchups.

Does UCA have enough coverage to defend the pass that so easily scored on us last year? I know the early turnovers and quick scores really helped the momentum for them last year. What can we do different this year to change that?

Do we drop one or two back to stop the long passes?

Do we bring one more up to put pressure on the passer?

So many questions, I'm glad we have Campbell, Brown, etc...to figure this stuff out and not us!

One thing I noticed while watching Sam play PVA@M was when Sam's QB Briscoe
would run the Zone read, he was looking more at the secondary coverage as
opposed to the line play. My point being he was deciding whether to hand of to
the Back or to throw it. He doesn't look like he is looking to run at all. This
of course is something the Bear coaching staff is aware of I'm sure. It seems
its a hybrid spin off of the zone read and it causes a lot of problems...

Briscoe probably threw 15 times that game off the zone read and I can't remember
him keeping to run it any...

We've GOT to get pressure on the QB. If Briscoe can sit back comfortably and read the D, he would beat anyone at any level.

I don't think they are as strong at the secondary and linebacking positions as in the past two years. While I don't advocate for a shootout, we should be able to move the ball. Running the ball away from PJ Hall and then coming back with hitches and screens to the other side should work and free up space over the top. This team is beatable.

Kick coverage has been abysmal to start the year, and SHSU will exploit that if the issues are not corrected. I'm hoping the kickers are closer to 100% on the 30th. Agree with everyone else essentially...limit turnovers and big plays and there's no reason we shouldn't have a good chance to win.

The defining game for this team & Campbell, besides SHSU & UCA, the slc is down and was last year imo. Whoever wins this game is in the drivers seat for the ring. Home game, senior qb, good running games & pretty salty defense. I think it will come down to big plays like always, hope the Bears come up with the most

Even though my son is redshirting, I am thinking about coming up for this game instead of using the season tickets I have for the LSU TROY game. Get a chance to see him and also for the first time, the Bears!

Questions are, who from here is going and are you tailgating? If so, do you mind if we join you? Would need to be family friendly group as it will likely be me, wife, and other kiddos. If they don't come with me, then any group to hang out with would be great, family friendly or not!

Lurker,

I know having a kid do all that work on the football team during the year and not getting to play right away is tough. I've got one at the high school level that is going through the same thing. But I can tell you from watching this coaching staff that he will be better for it and coach always plays those who put in the effort. I mean we used 8 rushers and 10 receivers last game plus we had many linemen rotate in and out constantly. Have faith in this staff. They don't waste talent or they would not have wanted your son.

My family tailgates. Your description sounds like mine. LOL. You and the fam are welcome to join us. It's not an intricate high tech tailgate but there will be hot dogs, hamburgers, music, drinks and games. PM me and I will give you details. We tailgate next to a couple other players families. Makes for great discussions.

Do you think this game will draw a large crowd to Estes?
SHSU will be tough and the Bears will need all the noise our fans can provide.
