2009 Southland Conference Football Media Day Quotes

Central Arkansas Head Coach Clint Conque

On Momentum from the 10-2 Season

“We certainly carried a lot of momentum and a lot of energy into recruiting and the offseason. We feel like we recruited as well athletically as we have. The offseason went very smoothly and in the summer program, we feel like we hit a home run, as far as attitude, participation and work ethic.”

On Strength of Defense

“On paper, we have nine starters back, plus our nose guard (Uriah Perry) who started 11 games in 2007. We have a lot of depth, a lot of athleticism and a lot of experience. I think we have a chance over there. Of course, the offenses in this league are extremely prolific and productive, so if you’re going to compete for championships, you have to play defense. It’s going to be very important that we compete at a high level on the defensive side, create short fields, more scoring opportunities, while our offense can get some continuity and confidence. Our defense is going to need to be a cornerstone for us to have success, from the beginning to the end.

On Offensive Holes to Fill

“Experience up front is hard to come by and starters Brad Gordon and Jeremy Ford started a bunch of games for us. And Boomer Cunningham played an awful lot all along the offensive line. We have some questions to answer, some holes to fill in that area, but we think we have some guys who can come in and compete and fill those holes.”

Senior Defensive End Larry Hart

“We have great chemistry and great experience on the defensive side and we’re expecting big things again. We have a lot of senior leadership on defense and a lot of competition. We have a lot of good players so expectations are high. We have had a great offseason and are excited about what we can do this year.”

“We will definitely step up and help take some pressure off the offense early since they are not quite as experienced as we are on defense. But regardless, our expectations won’t change. We feel like if teams don’t score, they can’t win, so we’re definitely going to try to put the clamps down. Whether the offense is scoring or not, we still have to do our job. We don’t have any problem doing that.”

“We’re excited about what we did last year and it’s definitely carried over. We have 95 percent of our team here for summer workouts and our guys are really excited and pumped up. We have high expectations to come out and do just as well as we did last year.”

Senior Offensive Tackle Lane Freiwald
“We’re a little less experienced (on offense) but we’re still excited going into the season. We have three senior offensive linemen, three senior running backs, some great skill players with experience. We lost a lot of guys on offense but we still have the quality players for us to still have a great offense.”

“I hope the defense can be as dominant as we think it can be. For them to be able to take a couple of points off the board for us would be great.”

“I think winning last year has motivated us even more for this season. We’ve been there before and we know what it’s like to be winners. It kind of fuels you going into the next season, to try to repeat and try to be there at the end again.”

“It’s all about hard work and dedication, those are always the keys. Our experience will help, but the hard work and dedication will be what makes it another great season.”

Hart is being talked about as a possible NFL draft pick in 2010, though undersized as a 6-foot-1, 248-pound defensive lineman.

“I am excited about the challenge of playing professionally,” Hart said. “Most people I talk to tell my I am one of these tweener guys, too small to play defensive end, but you are right there at outside linebacker to rush the passer. If I can rush the quarterback on passing downs as a defensive end or stand up at outside linebacker, I should be OK.”

Later, Texas State coach Brad Wright may have put the idea of preseason polls in perspective best.

“We were picked sixth in the conference last year, and we won it,” Wright said.

What a piece of work that guy is. They may have been handed the championship, but they didn't exactly win the league.

I've never seen anybody so proud to be the recipient of charity. I bet as a kid he used to flaunt his "Participant" trophies/ribbons. Hell, he may still have them prominently displayed in his office right next to his 2008 SLC United Way Champions trophy.

McCollum's Column: Polls and preseason rankings fuel some early fires

This reporter has seen, participated in and evaluated a lot of polls of many kinds.

I don’t recall ever seeing one break like this.

The University of Central Arkansas had nine players (out of 26 spots) gain first-team honors on the All Southland Conference football team. According to the preseason poll of coaches, the Bears, 10-2 last season and 6-1 in the league and return 16 starters, were then picked to finish fourth in the league. They were the third-place pick of the sports information directors.

There was no acknowledgement of the obvious asterisk — that the Bears had the best record in league, defeated Texas State on its home field and were considered by almost every SLC observer to be the best team in the league.

Any coach has the right to spin his team’s success in any manner he wishes, but a more accurate assessment of what happened was Texas State was designated the conference champion because the team with the best record and the one that finished in first place in the standings (UCA) couldn’t be recognized as the official conference champion because of its provisional status in the transition from NCAA Division II to Division I.

Can we get that section of the article printed up on an 8'x10' canvas and hang it on the front of the East side stands on Nov. 7? Or maybe mail a few (thousand) copies to Brad Wright's office?

The SLC could recognize UCA as the conference champion....but they would have to give up the automatic bid for the playoffs..
So Texas State represented the SLC as conference champion...as if it would have been impossible to do both.

More fun reading for players, coaches, and fans.

College Football: Bobcats targeted as SLC champs

Quote:
“We’re the big dogs right now,” Texas State defensive specialist Travis Houston said. “There’s no doubt about it. When you’re returning conference champions, everyone wants to be where you are.”

Hopefully our students get ahold of this, and Travis Houston is politely informed, time and time again, that not everybody wants to be in second place.

Since UCA wasn’t regarded as the conference champion, the rings fell into Texas State’s laps by default. The Bobcats know it’s going to be a sore spot for many in the SLC, but are ready to take them off, along with the gloves.

“By the time the last few weeks of conference roll around, it’s all about who has the most heart,” Houston said. “You can’t pull out the conference championship rings and win automatically.”

Selective rememberance is sometimes a coach's and player's best weapon for recollection of who they think they are - or can be. The recollection of us owning them, so far, since our involvement with the SLC seems to have slipped their mind.

I guess them winning the ring (you know, the one that the conference paid for) last year was kinda like the million dollars I once found. I didn't earn it but I kept it. However, until now I never bragged about it. Kind of an empty feeling , you know.

The voting by coaches certainly left a lot of people scratching their heads.

If you're interested in hearing what McNeese Coach Viator said, here's a link to KPLC-7 sports. (At the bottom of the video window, click on the 7 -- or whichever number will give you the little picture of Coach Viator and then click on the picture to play.) A few of Cowboy fans have deduced that Viator voted for da Bears! He says that he believes Central Arkansas is the team to beat.
