Here's what I think the issue is:

UCA raises entrance standards. UCA gets better educated students with higher incoming GPAs etc. Sounds good. But it means lower student count overall. But it means likely a higher graduation rate, which is good. However with lower student count comes less funds to run the institution. Which is bad.

So better students = less students = less money.

Less lotto tickets bought = less money for scholarships = more students using state aid to go to school = less money for higher ed.

It's a vicious circle.

So UCA will benefit from the new funding formula approved by the Legislature based on grad rates?

UCA standards have not been that low nor have the increases effected that many potential students who previously would have been accepted. We just need to be more aggressive in our recruiting. The University of Arkansas standards are higher and they have increased enrollment by 3-4000 over the past few years.

Have no idea how many uaf's increase from Arkansas but campus parking lots look like Austin North. All I know is when people I know who have never heard of UCA (and sometimes even Little Rock as we have so many newcomers to the state) find about and visit they are always impressed.

PAUL GREENBERG:
The latest in vocational ed

By Paul Greenberg

This article was published October 11, 2017 at 4:30 a.m.

Thanks to a half-million dollars in We the People's tax money, the latest thing in trade schools is being established at the University of Central Arkansas in Conway, better known as UCA. Dubbed a Cyber Range, this computer system is designed to let students become specialists able to spot a cyber attack, fend it off, and predict or prevent other cyber assaults. This state's governor, ordinarily the most cautious of leaders, seems barely able to contain his enthusiasm for this newest form of vocational training.

CONWAY, Ark. - The University of Central Arkansas came close to getting a real mascot. A black bear spotted one block from campus on Hillman Street early Thursday morning.

The story has everyone talking and one neighbor said he had no idea the bear was in the area until we showed him the pictures to prove it.

"I've never heard of anything like that," said Patrick Jeans.

Jeans was baffled to learn a 250-pound male black bear was in his neighborhood, a block away from the UCA campus.

"I'm just surprised you know. It's right in the middle of Conway. I could see if it's on the outskirts or something but, something had to be going on for that bear to venture that far," Jeans added.

A neighbor saw the bear on Hillman on his way to work and called 911. Police, fire and Arkansas Game and Fish all showed up to remove the bear from a tree. They got the bear down safely with the help of a tranquilizer gun and mattress.

"You know, I just, props to the Police Department and all the people that worked on it getting the situation under control," continued Jeans.

The word spread quickly around town and on social media.

"Everyone kept saying a real bear! Not Bruce the bear..not the mascot an actual bear is on or near campus," said UCA Spokeswoman Christina Madsen. "We find it very amusing because we are the bears and we have thousands of bears here as students at UCA."

A common word in these parts, but definitely not a common occurrence.

"I've heard of stories of them being out in the woods and stuff but that's just strange,"said Jeans.

The black bear was taken to a wildlife refuge management center south of Conway where it was released. Officials with the Arkansas Fish and Game said it's not unusual to see them across the state. If you spot one, stay away and call for help.

UCA MAINTAINS HIGH RANKING AMONG ‘TOP PUBLIC SCHOOLS’ IN THE SOUTH

The University of Central Arkansas maintained a ranking in the top 30 best regional public institutions in the South, according to the 2019 Best Colleges rankings by U.S. News & World Report released Monday, Sept. 10.

UCA ranks 26 in the Top Public Schools category of regional universities in the South, which is the highest ranking among other Arkansas regional public universities. A regional university is defined as an institution that provides a full range of undergraduate majors and master’s programs, according to U.S. News & World Report.

“For at least the last seven years, UCA has continually ranked in the top 30 of the Top Public Schools category among regional universities in the South. This continuous ranking solidifies our standing as a leader in innovative education and experiential learning opportunities for our students,” said UCA President Houston Davis. “Following a year of unprecedented fundraising for the university, we recently welcomed 2,033 freshman students who also are the most academically qualified in university history. We expect that UCA will continue to maintain this top-tier ranking.”

Universities in the Best Regional Universities category were ranked against their peer groups in one of four geographic regions. Generally, these universities draw students most heavily from surrounding states, according to U.S. News & World Report.

Overall, UCA ranks 71 among public and private institutions in the Best Regional Universities in the South category.

Apparently a student in Bear Hall passed away this morning. Details to come but a sad day for those who knew him and prayers up for his family and friends...and all the UCA community.
