U.S. judge in Conn.: Cheerleading not a sport

Quote:
HARTFORD, Conn. — Competitive cheerleading is not an official sport that colleges can use to meet gender-equity requirements, a federal judge ruled Wednesday in ordering a Connecticut school to keep its women's volleyball team.

Several volleyball players and their coach had sued Quinnipiac University after it announced in March 2009 that it would eliminate the team for budgetary reasons and replace it with a competitive cheer squad.

The school contended the cheer squad and other moves kept it in compliance with Title IX, the 1972 federal law that mandates equal opportunities for men and women in education and athletics. But U.S. District Judge Stefan Underhill disagreed in a ruling that those involved say was the first time the cheerleading issue has been decided by a judge.

Not that I agree, but I thought it was interesting.

Competetive cheering and gymnastics both require the use of judges for scoring. Technically not much difference.

Wellllllllllllllll, now wait a minute. I have coached cheerleading on the college, high school and little league levels and let me tell you IT IS A SPORT. Whether or not some Judge wants to rule it that way does not make any difference. I dare ask most people to go to a practice, do the stunts, run the miles, do the weights, prepare for competition and tell me it is not a sport. It may be a girlie sport but it is a sport. Okay, I feel better now. Hehehehehehehehehe Anything a person does to better themselves, compete and accomplish something should not be diminished, it should be celebrated!!!!!

Curling, ballroom dancing and synchronized swimming are Olympic Sports so I don't see competetive cheering as being any less athletic.

We consider bowlers as athletes?

If cheerleaders are receiving scholarships for their athletic abilities it should count towards Title IX.

I think they judge only said that so that school couldn't use cheerleading as a way not to have a volleyball team. Which with him saying it isnt a sport the school will either have to get rid of a men's sport or add a women's sport. I say good call judge.

While I agree the Friday night "Go Team" type is hardly a sport, have any of you guys watched the competitive cheer competitions on television? It is very athletic, strenous, uses a variety of athletic skills, team work......I can see where NCAA would have an issue as it is also coed which fouls up their preconceived notions. I would have to dig into further to see if this activity is not up to some others "sports".

Actually I heard on the radio that the school is starting a women's rugby team instead of bringing back volleyball.
