Up to 200 teams from around the country will come to Conway July 21-24, 2011, and play a guaranteed five-game tournament at multiple locations throughout the city. Tournament organizer Scott Bates said that Conway made sense as a host city for a number of reasons. “Conway’s facilities, community support and hospitality are going to help this event continue to grow.” HoopPlayUSA.com is a product and the flag ship of Elite Sporting Events Inc., which is in its seventh year of hosting youth based events. Yes, it is during an evaluation period. However, this isn't a cream-of-the-crop AAU tournament that will be bringing in loads of top-flight talent. It's not even AAU at all. And since it goes down to 3rd grade, the vast majority of the players there you won't even be able to make contact with. And of those you can, they're not all going to be the caliber of player you're looking for. Given that, I'm not going to get too excited about it being a huge recruiting tool. It will be nice for the city of Conway, though, and will definitely expose a lot of kids to the city and school – so it may end up helping the university as a whole more than it will the basketball programs. |
