SFA@UCA

SFA 11-19-12-16=58
UCA 13-12-20-25=70 (15-2/23-4)

Q4: A win deserving of a championship..........not quite done yet.........I think SBs finished the game 23-7 to seal the win.....Proffitt scores 14 in H2, mostly Q4 to finish with 24.........Jordan was an excellent 21/11..........Baudoin was a solid 138............Mullins a big 8 points.........Logan a very important 8 rebs.....by the way, SBs tough defense allowed only one assists by SFA...............great job today...........Go SugarBears!!

Coach: Had a hard time getting in an offensive flow.........so happy for the seniors..........have to get ready for Demons next Sat at their place............they beat SFA and nearly beat ACU..........

Q3: SBs get it in gear and come from behind to take 45-42 lead...........Jordan is 21/8 and profit has 10.........Jacks are 22/25 from FT and SBs only 6/9..........time to get it done..........Go SBs!!

H1: Trail 30-25 at half.............both teams <40% from the filed but SFA is 80% FTs and getting a lot more attempts to stay in the game..........Go SugarBears!!

SFA had a NICE crowd there. More than any other SLC school this year.

I sat next to a couple of SFA fans. I was unable to make the pregame senior presentations. One of the SFA mom's told me Maggie P. was a WRECK when they came to her turn. The SFA mom thought it was so sweet but also said it will most likely affect her shooting, at least in the first half. She was right. But then again she has a daughter playing in that game so she would know how these kids think.

Second half Maggie lit it up. The SFA mom said "yep, Maggie's back!"

Let's look at what's left for the regular season for the top 3 teams:
(SFA now has 4 losses and are out of title contention)

Standings:

UCA 15-2
ACU 14-2
Lamar 13-3

Schedules left: - plus previous margin of loss or victory for each team.

UCA: NWST (+33) on March 4th.

ACU: UIW (+9) on March 1, HBU (not played) on March 4.

Lamar: Nicholls (-11) on March 1, McNeese (+22) on March 4.

UCA beats NWST and they have at least a share of the conference title. Lose and they have to hope for an upset from one of ACU's opponents.

Likely scenario: UCA and ACU share regular season title.

This is it!

UCA plays at NWST tomorrow. (NWST is a mystery.)

ACU plays at HBU tomorrow. (Lamar beat HBU 74-22 recently)

Even though we beat NWST by 33 last time, I think we have the harder road to win the regular season title as compared to ACU. NWST lost to ACU by 1 recently.

@Northwestern State

UCA 17-13-18-14=62 (16-2/24-4)
NWS 10-12-14-15=51 (7-11/13-16)

Way to go SugarBears!!!! Big win on the road.

51% FGs and 42% 3s.........+9 rebs......held Demons to 37% FGs........Baudoin leads with an excellent 23/7/3 day..........Proffitt pitched in another 20.........Mullions did not score but had 4 rebs, 4 assists and 3 steals.....Jordan scored 6 with 7 rebs...........

Attura of NWS led all scorers with 24.

Congrats to our SBs for a repeat as SLC Champ!!!

While I'm glad that the Sugar Bears are the #1 seed, I'm not a big fan of giving the top two seeds byes until the semi-finals. Lots of conferences have a one round bye, and I think that's a good incentive, but getting directly to the semis just seems like you're trying to fix the tournament.

That said, I hope the SBs rip through their games en route to the dance!

SEC also has a two round bye for Top 4 seeds........of course, the conference is trying to make it easy on their best teams to get to Big Dance.........the more games a team plays the more likely some disaster can happen..........some see it a big reward for the regular season........so, let's take advantage of the bye......no room for a bad quarter..........

Yes and no. Their first round is really kind of a "play-in" for the bottom 4 seeded teams only. The two round bye for the top 4 seeds only gets them into the quarterfinals. Many other conferences follow a similar scheme -- the Atlantic 10, for one.

Again, I'm good with this kind of incentive, but a bye directly to the semis just seems wrong to me.

Since the Southland formats its tournament like it does, I'm really happy that the Sugar Bears get the advantage!

GO SUGAR BEARS

2017 SLC Tourney

Championship Game - Sunday, 3/12/17 - Noon - CBSSN

#1 UCA 60
#3 SFA 35

SFA 12-8-4-11=35
UCA 18-9-15-18=60 (26-4)

http://www.ucasports.com/news/2017/3/12/womens-basketball-back-to-back-sugar-bears-steamroll-sfa-to-repeat-as-southland-tourney-champs.aspx

Wow....hold the Jacks to only 35 points..........SBs 48% v 27% FGs........33% vs 15% 3s...........+10 rebs.........SBs had only 6 TOs.......... lowest point total in SLC finals at 35.........awesome defense.............Maggie had only one 3 but still gets 21.....Taylor B a very solid 13/9............Kierra had a fine 9/13/2 day........Bri added a solid 6/6/3 ..........Go SugarBears!!!

Third Round (Sat - 3/11/17 -ESPN3)

#2 Lamar 48
#3 SFA 62

#1 UCA 62
#5 TAMCC 44

TAMCC 4-16-16-8=44 (14-18)

Coach: I'll take this win......we can out o hot with intensity......relaxed in Q3......got to keep going and not let off this time of year.......we were playing not to lose rather than to win.....got to do a better job of moving the ball better and getting a scorer open.......got to get ready for a tough game tomorrow........

H1: SBs up 29-20 but had led 24-11 late in Q2...........46% vs 28% FGs and +13 reb advantage is the game at this point........Proffitt and Baudoin each have 11 and Baudoin has 6 rebs to go with 5 from Mullins...........got to keep it up and not let down....Go SugarBears!!

Congratulations to the Sugar Bears! Southland Conference Champions, 17 in a row and NCAA Tournament two years in a row.

Excellent job, ladies. Thanks for your contributions to the Bear legacy.
