FRISCO, Texas - Nicholls guard/forward Fred Hunter has been named the Southland Conference men's basketball player of the week, the league office announced Monday.
Hunter set a career high with 28 points in a 63-62 overtime loss in the season opener at Houston last Friday. He was 1-for-2 from behind the 3-point arc and made all three free-throw attempts as part of a 12-for-12 team effort by the Colonels from the foul line. Hunter also was the Colonels' leading rebounder, hauling down eight boards, including six on the offensive end. Nicholls is 0-1 on the season and returns to action Tuesday night at LSU.
Honorable mention this week goes to Northwestern State forward Will Pratt, Sam Houston State forward Josten Crow, Stephen F. Austin center Jereal Scott, Lamar guard Devon Lamb and Central Arkansas center Carlos Dos Santos. To receive honorable mention, a player must receive votes from 25 percent of the Southland men's basketball sports information directors.
