We have a winning record to start the year! That's rare! =D>

We are averaging what 6 or 8 wins a season?
Well we're halfway there! =D> =D> =D> =D>

@Tulsa

http://www.ucasports.com/news/2017/11/25/mens-basketball-sluggish-bears-fall-to-golden-hurricane.aspx?path=mbball

UCA 32-40=72
TU 45-47=92

FGs: 38% v 54%
3s: 26% v 52%
FTs: 68% v 64%
Rebs: 43 v37
TOs: 17 v 14

Howard 23, Kamba 12 and Schmit 10

"I thought we rebounded the ball much better and I thought we attacked the offensive glass,' said Pennell. "That part was good. And honestly, I thought the last eight minutes of the first half and the second half we competed. But it's a 40-minute game. You can't take 12 minutes off. The effort was sporadic and we turned the ball over way too much. And it was just carelessness, it wasn't so much of what Tulsa was doing.'

Now 3-3

Next up: Morehead State at 7pm at Farris Center

UCA vs Morehead State

MSU 37-41=78 (1-4)
UCA 39-43=82 (4-3)

This is the type game that would have slipped away in prior years too often. Bears led by 10 then trailed by 9 and came back for the win. Morehead State had 5 in double figures, including one double double. Some stats:

MSU/UCA

FGs: 53% vs 46%
3s: 43% v 36%
FTs: 47% vs 58% ( Bears hit 14 and MSU only 7.hence the margin)
Rebs: 37 v 35 (Bears were +3 o-rebs)
TOs: 17 v 12

Kamba 20/8/2 with 3 blocks
Howard 16/2/11
Jones 16/2/2 (5-7 from 3)
6 others scored

Now take the long drive to the Rock for UALR Wednesday night at 6:30pm.

Trojans are 1-5 with a home loss to OBU, a close road loss at Memphis, 3 straight thumpings at Grand Canyon and San Diego and home vs Robert Morris.........then beat Norfolk State at home Sunday by 70-55........

@UALR

UCA 34-31=65 (4-4)
UALR 23-48=71 (2-5)

Very disappointing game.........this is the second game in a week where Bears get a nice H1 lead then not only lose the lead but nearly get too far back to try to catch up. That is not lack of talent or skill but losing focus and discipline. Led by 16 with one minute to go in H1 then fell back by 9 with 3:30 to go.........a 25 point swing............ugh.....

Stats (UCA/UALR):

FGs: 38%/40%
3s: 30% vs 26%
FTs: 73% vs 68%
Rebs: 43 v 42 (16-15 on o-rebs)
TOs: 15 vs 10

Howard had 12/4/3 game.......Parnell 11/5/1....Unruh 11/5......Koval 10/4/1......

Coach Boone was pretty blunt in postgame interview with Justin.......was not disciplined on defense starting late in H1, lethargic in H2 and did not play the right offense when UALR went to a zone.........

As poorly as we played, just think.............Howard goes 4/9 from 3 rather than 2/9......points paint went to UALR by 32 v 26.........the winning margin........got to block out and help out on drives better to fix that............I'll hit the last point easy.......UALR had 10 more FTs.....we get 10 more FTs and hit 7.....we win...21 fouls called on Bears vs only 10......

The good news is that all this is correctable......especially with a couple days of lots of floor drill sprints.....

Next at San Francisco on Monday then head across the Bay Bridge to play Cal.........more Bears vs Bears.........play more like we did vs UCLA and come home with a couple road wins........

I heard the coach say he teaches the players defense.

Great.

Now teach them to apply what they've learned.

I can tell you how to bake a cake but if you don't get the ingredients and actually do it then you are wasting time.

C'mon coaches, get them to actually USE what you have taught them. =D>

When you get beat over and over again by a screen play, someone's not teaching them how to beat that or rotate.

When you get beat by 3 pointers over and over again because the guy who is supposed to be defending the shooter is running down to the basket, someone is not teaching them to gaurd the shooter!

IF they are being taught, then they need to be taught how to apply it. If they can't do that, then maybe they need to sit it out.

These kids need to learn to wear their opponent like a coat not watch them from a distance.

Blocking out seems to be a lost art when one opponent gets 16 rebounds...

If this is the new basketball then its just too much to watch...

@San Francisco

UCA 33-43=76 (4-5)
USF 37-41=78 (4-3)

Bears led by 9 in H1 then had to close at the buzzer with a 3.............fought all H2 to get the lead but was 10 down with about 10 minutes to go.........finally got back into a one shot game and nearly won on a hoard 3 at the buzzer.

UCA/USF

FGs: 51% vs 38%
3s: 56% vs 35%
FTs: 80% vs 63% (but USF had 10 more chances)
Rebs: 30 v 43 (to make it worse only 1 o-reb vs 17 for USF)
TOs: 12 v 12

Dons were +11 2nd chance led by the +16 o-reb advantage..........pretty much the game.

Howard was 27/3/1.........Kamba 16/5/2....Unruh 11/7/2.......

Coach: Pleased with effort......played hard enough to win but not boxing out on free throws which hurt........good intensity......overall a good basketball game........coming back from 10 down late was notable after not doing at UALR.......got the play we wanted at the end with Howard for three........just did not get in.......team mates looked for him better tonight............this schedule should help us prepare for Southland.......a little bit better rebounding would have made a difference......

Next is Cal on Wednesday at 9pm central.

Not boxing out on free throws? WTF... how elementary can you get?

Doesn't switch out on screens?

Doesn't gaurd the trailing man?

The list goes on and on...

Hate to say this but i'm done. Nothing has changed with this group. I don't care if we average 90 points a game. Our defense will allow 91.

Still a bear fan...just not one for this team or its coaches....until they get it figured out. We haven't played defense in years. Unacceptable.

Good....I'll stick with them.

The one thing about them this year that bothers me is that they are not mean enough. Their intensity level is all over the place. Just wish one of our guys would haul off and knock the dog out of an opponent. They just play too nice.

Guess Cal just got the dog knocked out of them?

Great win!

@ Cal

UCA 45-51=96
Cal 25-44=69

Wow.............Cal not a leading Pac-12 team but they are Pac-12............Bears are now 1-1 vs P-12 this season taking UCLA to OT and now whipping Cal...........one more P-12 to go at Oregon.......No doubt Ducks will have UCA scouted pretty well.....

45% FGs...50% 3s and 92% FTs......only 13 TOs and +9.........lost rebounds by 3 but finally got decent o-rebs at 11.........20 assist........4 blocks and 6 steals..........held Cal to 38% FGs and 23% 3s..........Bench won 28-16

Howard 26/2/6.........Kamba 23/7/3............Jones 13/7/3..........

Now to come back and apply this to UALR at the Fc on Saturday at 7pm..........

Great win AT Cal! I know Cal is down, but it is always nice to get a road win at a P5 school with name recognition!

Got to love this headline and story...........

http://www.dailycal.org/2017/12/07/cal-mens-basketball-embarrassed-central-arkansas-96-69/

Cal Mens' Basketball Embarrassed by Central Arkansas, 96-69

With the few quality looks the Bears did have on offense, they were unable to convert. Senior Marcus Lee, the most physically imposing presence on the court, got more than a couple of quality looks down in the low-post, but he couldn’t convert a couple of jump hooks that came within five feet of the basket. Cal’s night offensively could best be summarized by the wide-open layup freshman Deschon Winston blew in the second half................

UCA vs UALR

UALR 30-24=54 (2-7)
UCA 35-34=69 (6-5)

UALR/UCA

FGs: 41% vs 28%
3s: 20% vs 26%
FTs: 59% vs 78%
Rebs: 41 vs 45
TOs: 12 v 18

Bears had 6 blocks...........17 assists only 9.........Bears last trailed early H1 when down 13-11...

Kamba 19/5/1............Howard 18/7/2........Parnell and Koval (7 rebs) each had 8.......

Coach: Did a nice job of correcting things we did not do well last week at their place....you have to win games like this with defense when you do not shoot well in order to win conference championships.......Trojans will be one of the better defensive teams we play.......Howard defended really really well.....will take next three days off and finals next week......need to rest and will practice next on Wed......Morehead State will be a challenge on road....... fans got really loud tonight and thre guys really liked that....

Hayden Koval with Justin after the game......pretty impressive sounding for a freshman....

Attendance was 2412..........

At Morehead State next Saturday................
