Our Sugar Bears are currently ranked 61st. In my opinion, that is too low. The only losses for our girls are to current#2 Penn State, #24 Arizona, and # 14 Marquette, with a win over #16 Kansas. I just don't think the girls are getting the respect they deserve right now. I believe they are at least a top 40 team, of course that is jmo. What do the others on this board think?

I think they may be ranked a little low, but it is because we play in the SLC and had a fairly weak OOC schedule. Yes, we had a few big name games, but overall our OOC competition was very weak. We will have to find better teams that are willing to play us (preferably at home) in the OOC slate if we want to move up (even if it means a few more L's).

Its mainly our weak SLC schedule. SLC is a weak volleyball conference.if we keep up our winning ways we will be probably in the 50s by the end of the season, which is good enough for the tournament.

This was a better pre-season schedule than in years past, but we still play way too many really low RPI teams. Don't get me wrong, the win over Kansas was huge, but the schedule needs to have more ranked teams if UCA is to crack the top 40 or so. Same is true if we want to start producing All-Americans. SLC, as mentioned, isn't a strong VB conference, so conference play won't boost us much, if at all.

I think the current RPI is about right given the SB schedule. Last year's 50something at its peak was kind of a fluke of mathematics with an even weaker schedule than this year -- SBs were one of the "RPI Cinderella" teams.

As for the NCAA tournament, the only sure way in is to win the SLC tournament. Traditionally the open bids run out at about mid-40 teams, so ending up in the 50s would really be a long shot for an at-large slot, although it would certainly help first round seeding.

Hopefully another NCAA tournament appearance and 50-60ish finishing RPI will produce a consistently higher level of OOC play, both at home and on the road.

I suppose programs at our stage of development have to balance preparing for conference play (ie, playing teams where we can play lots of people to get on-court time) vs playing for RPIs (ie, recognized strong progams which will be on the road) vs balancing travel time/cost.

Below are some programs in our general travel area that would add to RPI (and probably loss column) showing current RPI:

#1- Texas
#6 - Missouri
#10 - Nebraska
#13 - Kentucky
#16 - Kansas
#19 - OU
#28 - LSU
#31 - UAF (oops...they are not allowed to play us)
#40 - Tulsa

I admit I do not understand the RPI formula used here....SBs played #2 Penn State (played well until last game), #14 Marquette (nearly won), #16 Kansas (did win) and #24 Arizona.......

The next highest rated team is #90 ORU.....then #128 Northwestern State, #159 TAMCC and #177 Sam Houston State......those teams are much better than these rankings......they must really have weak OOC opponents...

Are you willing to get the 3-4 teams in preseason toruneys (like the Penn State and Kansas) then drop UAPB (#316)and La Tech (#280) for Missouri (#6) and OU (#19)? Intsaed of 19-3 we would probably be 17-5....maybe Coach can entice some higher ranked teams into the SB Classic..at least some 100-120 RPI type
teams...

By the way, the ladies were at SFA (#192) tonight and won 3-0...now 12-0/20-3....keep winning and RPI will improve....

Southland Conference is currently ranked 26 out of 33 in terms of strength. Last year the conferenc was a bit stronger at around 17-18. This explains a lot when it comes to RPI.

Below is the UCA schedule and Pablo Rankings of each opponent. UCA is at #99 nationally out of 334. Pablo takes all things into account such as home/away, set scores, point differential, strength of schedule, win probablility etc, etc, etc.... It's quite an algorithim this guy came up with. If you go to RichKern.com you can see it listed but you have to be a member to actually see the poll.

As you can see, UCA has played some very quality teams but has also had to play some teams in the league that are not that strong.

Despite finishing with a perfect SLC record, the strength (or rather lack thereof) of our final opponents came back to bite us (We played NWS (102), New Orleans (298), and SELA (266). We dropped down to #56 in this weeks RPI. Hopefully a nice run through the SLC tournament will bolster our RPI!
In the first two rounds of the tournament we will face #8 SFA (191 RPI), and if we beat SFA either #4 SHSU (162) or #5 TAMU-CC (142).

RPI

Look who's #23?!?!?! Not that we are being picked to make it to the final four, but at least someone with some visibility has taken notice of the VolleyBears! Keep it up this week at the SLC Tourney. I seriously believe we can get a 3 seed in a region. Would be nice indeed!

Very proud of the team, and coaches. HELLUVA job for a small school in little ole` Arkansas. Would LOVE to see the Sugar bears and the Hogs duke it out in the Farris center!

Haven`t seen the latest rankings yet today. I do know that our Marissa Collins was ranked 4th IN THE NATION, in assists per set last week.
