Hope we can get some Bear fans out this weekend. This is an honor to host the conference meet and a chance to show off our new track. SLC is a good track and field conference. Bears and SugarBears probably hoping to be in top half as a team but we will have several athletes in the hunt for individual championships and the men's 4 x 400m relay could be a barn burner. Athletes that do well at this meet may be able to advance to the NCAA D1 Regionals in Fayetteville in June.

Links to UCA and SLC outdoor track and field results below.

SugarBears 4th and Bears 10th. SELA men and Sam Houston State women won team championships.

I was able to attend both Saturday and Sunday sessions and will give a first hand review of events that I witnessed. You can be proud of our young people and how they represented UCA.

Excellent track meet and quite a few SLC athletes will be competing at NCAA D1 Regionals th last weekend in May.

SLC Track and Field Championships
Bill Stephens Track at UCA
5/9-11/14

Before getting to a recap of Bears and SugarBears at Southland meet below is some data on the high qualifty marks at this meet:

# below refer to rank in NCAA Division 1:

M100m: #1 -Justin Walker of Northwestern State, 9.95w..tremendous leg speed
M200m: #14 - Justin Walker of Northwestern State, 20.47
M4x100m: #20 - Northwestern State; #28 - Sam Houston State
MPV: #6 - Colton Ross of SE LA, 18' 2.75" ..real deal...ranked #2 based on vault earlier
MTJ: #27 - Charles White, Sam Houston State
MLJ: #27 - Brandon Daniels, SE LA
M400mh: #13 - Josh Taylor, SFA
W100mh: #22 - Sabrina Starr, Sam Houston State
W400mh: #18 - Conseula Lindsay, Northwestern State

There were numerous other Top 50 marks.

No doubt this was the highest quality track meet ever run at UCA and in central Arkansas. Windy weather and hot weather affected distance races although some very good times.

There were numerous who likely will be eligible for NCAA D1 West Regionals in Fayetteville on 5/29-31.

Observations from SLC and NCAA West Regional Meet.

SugarBears really had a great team meet at SLC Meet finishing in a very solild 4th just ahead of McNeese and only a few points behind Northwestern State. The Bears struggled to a 10th place finish but had their moments.

Mostly I was able to watch the running events but caught some field events. Some of the highlights were:

SOPH Brooke Cassar crusesd to a win in the 10,000m at a pedestrian (for her) 37:06 while FR Bridgette Caruthers just finished out of the money in 9th with a promising 39:03 time. Bodes well for 2015.

SR Erika Setzler ran a smart and aggressive race to win the 3000m steeple in a solid 10:20 time good enough to get her to NCAA Regionals. She and the Lamar runner and her nemesis (Louise Webb) took over early in the race and Setzler just got stronger each lap, running the barriers like hurdles never touching and efficiently cleared the water hazards with one step on top then bounding to the top edge of the water before returning to her normal pace. I suspect she gained a half step each water hazrd which ended up being most of her winning marhgin. Erika made a concerted move wit about 600m to go and ran the last few hurdles with precision never slowing. This was a picture perfect that showed she has potential beyond college if she can continue to train and compete. She had s found her event.

Brooke and Erika went 2-3 in the 5000m in hot adn humid conditons coming after their wins in their otherr events. No shame in this finish as this type weather zaps distance runner's legs.

SR Jordan Chadwick capped her track career with UCA with strong 2:13.25 for 3rd in the W800m. The race was run in a blazing sun and Chadwick smartly held back in the first 200m then closedthe gap and chased the leaders nearly running them down the last 50m. Good run.

FR Marine Lecart and SR Kayla Nehus took 3rd and 7th in the W1500m bioth runnin solid races. Lecart ran 4:32 (about a 4:48 mile) and Nehus timed 4:42 (about 4:57). Lecart hung at the back of the lead pack the first 1000m then put on a furious last 300m to just come up short for 2nd. Another good run by both.

SR Tanesha Maxwell posted a solid 11.66 for 3rd in the W100m. She also qualified for NCAA Regionals. She just missed making the finals in the W200m.

JR Khadijah Smith just barely missed the finals of the W400m and ran a nice 56.18 beng the first one out.

Normally money in the bank JR Jean Black had a poor start and came up short in not making the finals of the W100m hurdles. The start is huge to hurdlers to get their steps into their pattern. These were some points left on the track but the effort was there.

The SugarBear 4x100m realy team took 6th in 46.22 and the 4x 400m team took 7th in a solid 3:48.

Will take a look at more of the events later.
