From Jan's e-mail: CONWAY, Ark. _ The University of Central Arkansas finished first and second in the Gulf South Conference All-Sports Trophy standings for the 2005-06 school year. The UCA men won the All-Sports Trophy for the first time, topping second-place North Alabama and West Florida by 5.5 points. UCA finished with 65 points, while UNA and UWF had 59.5 each. UCA is the first Arkansas school to win the men's All-Sports award. The Bears got 12 points for winning the GSC championship in football and 12.5 points for baseball. Golf added 12 points and basketball chipped in 11.5. UCA also got nine points from cross country and eight from soccer. The UCA women finished second to West Florida after winning the trophy two of the past three years. UWF had 83 points compared to 68.5 for UCA. UCA finished second in golf, good for nine points, and also scored well in cross country (15), basketball (11.5) and volleyball (13.5). Soccer contributed 8.5 points, while tennis added 8.5 and softball 2.5. On the women's side, Alabama-Huntsville was third with 67, followed by North Alabama (62), West Georgia (59), Delta State (56), Harding (56), Henderson State (50), Lincoln Memorial (48.5), Valdosta State (45), Southern Arkansas (41.5), Arkansas Tech (41), Montevallo (33), Ouachita Baptist (29), Arkansas-Monticello (22), Christian Brothers (21) and West Alabama (20.5). In the men's standings, Valdosta State was fourth with 56.5 points, followed by Delta State (48.5), Lincoln Memorial (39), Montevallo (39), Harding (38.5), Ouachita Baptist (36.5), Christian Brothers (36), West Georgia (34.5), Alabama-Huntsville (34), Southern Arkansas (33.5), Henderson State (29.5), West Alabama (27), Arkansas-Monticello (25) and Arkansas Tech (20.5). And by "the trophy presentation", I'm sure you mean "kicking it around until it's chipped/broken, wrapping it in a single layer of cellophane, sliding it in a large, unpadded manila envelope, shipping it via cheapest means possible, and then later following up with an apology letter when it arrives in tatters, saying 'oops, must've gotten busted in the shipping process. We'll get you a new one', with the 'in 2073' understood." Then he'll offer John Thompson a GSC pullover as a sign of goodwill. |
