Credible start Saturday at the Memphis Twilight, a really neat meet run at night at a large soccer complex in Memphis.

The top two Bears ran very well for the 4 mile course in a little over 20 minutes.

Bears were 5th out of 25 teams and lost to Middle Tennessee, Alabama, Ole Miss and Mississippi State. Some of the teams we finished ahead of included Memphis, Tulane, A-State, UALR. More important our avg time per runner was close to 3rd place Ole Miss and the time spread between out 1st and 5th runner was a solid 59 seconds. Note the 1-2 finishers from MTSU and Bama ran a very good 19:11 (4:48 [per mile)

SugarBears were 7th of 25 behind Bama, Ole Miss, Mississippi State, Memphis, MTSU and UAB; did beat A-State, UALR and Tulane. Team had a 62 seconds 1-5 spread which is respectable.

Note that a tight spread is key at conference meets to minimize the number of other runners who can squeeze in between.

Complete meet results below for Events 7 and 8 near the bottom.

Always nice as a cross country runner to have a home meet with no travel. This is a small meet that looks more like the old AIC and running different distances for a change. Women ran 4K (about 2.5M) and men ran 6k (about 3.7M).

I did not find team results but looking at race results I came up with the following:

Women:

27 UCA (1-3-6-7-10)
35 Harding (2-4-5-11-13)
101 ATU

Other teams included UALR, SAU and Hendrix.

SugarBear Brigitte Caruthers won in 14:24 which is a solid 5:47 per mile.

Men:

26 UCA (1-3-4-6-10)
49 Harding
62 UALR

UCA's Marcus Schweikert slipped in ahead of UALR's Isaac Lalang 18:43-18:44 with both averaging 5:01 per mile.

Next race is Saturday at the Rhodes Invite in Memphis.........usually a very good and large meet with lots of solid XC teams from D3 to D1.........plenty of competition over a tough course if they still run the traditional Shelby Farms course.

@Chile Pepper in Fayetteville

http://www.ucasports.com/news/2016/10/2/uca-women-10th-men-11th-at-chili-pepper-festival.aspx

This is a NCAA certified course and is the site of the D1 Regionals next month. The course runs a little fast as it has few hills and when the wind is calm as it was Saturday.

This meets runs a D1 division and D2 and Others division together but scores separately. That makes for a very big and crowded field of runners. The men's race had 63 teams and a total of 301 finishers. The women's race had 310 finishers and 40 teams.

UCA's top runners did well. Brigitte Caruthers was 22nd (excellent) in 17:31 which is very solid. Marcus Scweikert was 32nd in 24:57 for 8k and Bill Kemboi was 38th in 25:08 both of which should show well at SLC meet.

Other than Arkansas, UCA defeated the other Arkansas D1 teams who competed (UALR, ASU).

Men's D1 Team Results

32 Arkansas
115 Wichita State
115 Mizzou
132 Texas Tech
149 Villanova

Interestingly Samford was 6th.

The overall winner was Vincent Kiprop of D2 Missouri Southern who ran a fabulous 23:04 for 8k (about 4.9 miles) for a stout 4:42 per mile average. He led from about he 200 meter mark and never looked back.

Women's D1 Team Results

22 - Arkansas
72 - Mizzou
127 - TCU
134 - Wichita State
156 - Samford

UCA was 10th of 18 at 294.

The overall winner was Karissa Schweizer of Mizzou in a very fine 16:09 for 5k (3.1 miles). I have seen Karissa run many times in indoor and outdoor track and when she is "on" she puts on a vicious surge the last third of the race which she did Saturday. Her time is about 5:10 per mile.
