CSN West: Lamar Cardinals Reincarnation?

Beaumont, Texas is a city of 115,570, and that community has been waiting for a February day such as we had last Wednesday — one of college football’s biggest days with its national signing day — for a long time.

Why? Beaumont has been without a Division I college football team for nearly two decades after Lamar University dropped its football program following the 1989 season.

That drought for those Texas community football-hungry residents appears close to ending.
“Yes, I am very much in favor of the return of football to Lamar,” said Lamar athletic director Billy Tubbs, the former Cardinal, Oklahoma and Texas Christian University basketball coach...

Burnett remembered Lamar football from his collegiate days at Louisiana Tech. The league's commissioner in the north Dallas suburb of Frisco, Burnett was elated when he talked about Lamar's intent to revive football...

Lamar re-institutes football with great energy





HOUSTON For much of the afternoon Tuesday, Ray Woodard sat by himself at a table well away from the spotlight reading preseason media guides and talking on a cell phone.

Woodard, the friendly, new Lamar University football coach, had more of a distance presence at Southland Conference Media Days. But he's a major face in the league's future.

This year, Woodard joked he could bring no players for preseason interviews because he really has none.

He's building on a dream a big, long-awaited dream....

$4 million donation from Provost Umphrey Law Firm and Umphrey family

Lamar University's football stadium will have a new name when the Cardinals return to the gridiron for the 2010 season, officials announced today.

The stadium will become Provost Umphrey Stadium in recognition of a $3 million contribution to Lamar University from the firm and an additional $1 million gift from Walter and Sheila Umphrey, said James Simmons, president of the university. The gifts will "enable the university to move ahead with the return of a competitive football program," Simmons said...

Lamar has begun the process of overhauling everything to do with their football facility. Their new Pressbox has already been completed or close to it, I believe. Now, new turf and a new locker room facility is now being constructed...

Lamar University completed its football schedule for 2010 Friday with the addition of Panhandle State as the Cardinals' 11th opponent for the school's first season of competition since 1989.
