From a post I made on KatFans, UTSA passed their athletic referendum and now, it goes to the Board of Regents. Many view this as the step towards football if they can get enough support from the community and at the very least, possibly a big push that will increase their budget and move their program out of the Southland...
-------------

SAN ANTONIO – Students at The University of Texas at San Antonio today learned that a referendum to support expansion of the school’s athletics program passed with 3,031 students voting for and 1,571 against. The students’ endorsement of increased fees includes support for the eventual addition of a football program at the city’s only Division I athletics program. The percentage breakdown for the 4,602 votes cast is 65.9 percent for and 34.1 percent against.

“UTSA students have spoken, and this vote endorses their dream to take the athletics program at the University to the next level,” said Gage Paine, UTSA’s vice president for student affairs.

“With this vote students demonstrate once again that they support the expansion of student life activities at the University,” Paine added. “During the last five years, students at UTSA have supported the expansion of the University Center, the Recreation – Wellness Center, parking facilities and additional on-campus housing.”

Lamar not only Southland Conference school seeking football's return

Eighteen years after its football program died, Lamar University is attempting to bring it back to life.

The Cardinals aren't alone.

In addition to Southeastern Louisiana, which re-instated football in 2003, at least three SLC members - Texas-Arlington, Texas-San Antonio and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi - have conducted feasibility studies within the last three years about returning to the gridiron.

While one school appears to be moving forward with its plans, two others have decided to place football on the shelf for now...

Issue date: 8/26/08 Section: News

UTSA is on the verge of announcing the start of football, a new $80 million athletic complex and a move toward a top level NCAA conference.

UTSA athletic officials are awaiting permission from The University of Texas (UT) System to announce an athletic fundraising initiative to help establish a football program and move all 17 sports toward a Football Bowl Subdivision (Division 1A) conference.

"At that point, we will be asking everyone-boosters to alumni -to help raise the funds needed," Athletic Director Lynn Hickey said. "Right now we are waiting to hear from the UT System to give us permission to announce the initiative. It could take four to five weeks."...
