First FCS game called off...

Here's the release from Nicholls Athletics...

THIBODAUX, La. - With Hurricane Gustav forecasted by the National Weather Service to make landfall around the Thibodaux area, Nicholls University and New Mexico State University have agreed to cancel their football game scheduled for Thursday September 4.

"Nicholls University appreciates the incredible amount of support we have received from New Mexico State University in approaching the urgency of this situation with Hurricane Gustav," said Dr. Stephen T. Hulbert, Nicholls University President.

"After speaking with New Mexico State University President Dr. [Waded] Cruzado this evening, we came to the conclusion that it was not in the best interest of our student-athletes to send our team to Las Cruces. We had alarming concerns from the parents and families of our football team, and went ahead and made the decision."

TT, or anyone else...

Does anyone know how our other fellow conference members cities ended up faring yesterday during Gustav. Thibodaux I know was prettywell dead center near the eye right? Also I'm sure Hammond got hit hard with wind and rain, and Lake Charles, not sure what they got, probably more wind and a ton of rain.

At one point I was thinking if this thing is as bad as it could be, a fourth of the SLC could be heavily damaged by the same storm.

Hope all is well.

Eating at Chik-Fil-A yesterday I heard some people saying they were from Lake Charles. Wondered how McNeese fared through the storm.

McNeese State’s football game with Delta State set for Saturday in Cowboy Stadium will be played as scheduled according to athletic director Tommy McClelland.

Kickoff for the McNeese-Delta State game on Saturday remains at 7 p.m. Tickets for the game will be available throughout the week at the McNeese ticket office which will re-open Wednesday morning.

Ticket prices are $18 for reserved seats and $14 for general admission. Season tickets remain on sale at $102 each and a family plan of four tickets goes for $204.

The Cowboy football players are slated to return to campus Wednesday and head coach Matt Viator said that he planned to have a practice that morning.

Damage from Hurricane Gustav was not as extensive in Lake Charles and Calcasieu Parish as it was in other parts of the state. A mandatory evacuation order was rescinded Tuesday allowing residents back into the city and parish.

Ryan Ivey, assistant athletic director, said that Saturday’s game title sponsor will be Lake Charles Toyota and that the first 5,000 fans into the game will receive a magnetic Cowboy football schedule card as well as a cheer card from the Lake Charles American Press.

Also, a parachute team will jump into the stadium in pre-game ceremonies and at halftime McNeese most valuable athletes from the 2007-2008 season will be recognized along with the winner of the Desmond Jones athlete of the year award.

Gustav cuts a swath through SLC

Before they even thought about preparing for an opponent this weekend, many Southland Conference coaches and athletes had to deal with Gustav.

Coaches spent the weekend anxiously gazing at hurricane tracking projections on radar screens as they were breaking down film.

It's not your average preparation week...

This e-mail came across today from SLU...they are at Ole Miss preparing to take on Mississippi State...

LIONS PRACTICING AT OLE MISS FOR SATURDAY GAME AGAINST DAWGS

OXFORD, Miss. – The Southeastern Louisiana University football team went through its second practice in its temporary surroundings Wednesday in preparation for Saturday’s 6 p.m. kickoff at Mississippi State

After a 34-28 win at Alcorn State on Saturday, the Lions traveled back to Hammond after the game before departing Sunday for Camp Lake Stephens in Oxford, Miss. With the impending arrival of Hurricane Gustav, the normally five-hour drive up I-55 took 10 hours to complete as the Lions arrived late Sunday night.

The Lions, held a morning workout on Tuesday before returning to practice on Wednesday with a two-hour session at Ole Miss.

INITIAL DAMAGE ASSESSMENT FOR NICHOLLS ATHELTICS
Sept. 4, 2008

THIBODAUX, La. - Hurricane Gustav left behind a major mess, and Nicholls Athletics' facilities were not spared from its wrath as the Colonels Softball Complex and Ray E. Didier Field suffered the most damage.

The Colonels Softball Complex sustained damage to its backstop, and also had its scoreboard in leftfield demolished to beyond repair. The outfield fence has also been blown over.

Ray E. Didier Field's leftfield and centerfield fence no longer exists as winds from Hurricane Gustav have left only the structure that once held up the outfield wall...

NICHOLLS CANCELS BOWIE STATE FOOTBALL GAME SEPT. 13
Sept. 9, 2008

THIBODAUX, La. - Nicholls State University President Stephen Hulbert announced that the Saturday, Sept. 13, football game against Bowie State has been cancelled due to damage to the lighting at John L. Guidry Stadium resulting from Hurricane Gustav.

"I have decided that the safety of the players, coaches, fans and officials is of utmost importance," Hulbert said. "Bowie State officials were also concerned about the unpredictability of Hurricane Ike and its impact on their travel plans." ...

Quote:
An inspection of the stadium's lights indicated that at least two poles lack structural integrity as a result of high winds. Nicholls will request that the State of Louisiana take immediate action to address the situation.

"If stadium lighting is not available, the remainder of the games may be moved to daylight hours," Hulbert said. "While I am eager for the 2008 Colonel football team to take the field, I must ensure that everyone who comes to Guidry Stadium can enjoy the game without fear of injury."
