CSN Down South: Time to Unite Once More in Wake of Cancellations
By Jason Plotkin, CSN Down South Columnist

Quote:
Canceled. Canceled. Canceled. Canceled. Four Southland Conference games were canceled this past weekend. A football fan’s worst nightmare.

Games between McNeese State and Cal Poly, Sam Houston State and Prairie View A&M, and Stephen F. Austin and Kentucky Weslayan were called off due to Hurricane Ike. Meanwhile, Nicholls State’s home opener against Bowie State was erased due to continuing complications left by Hurricane Gustav.

The best part about sports is that they have the power to unite and distract. Those four Southland school fan bases will soon reunite at the venues they have spent many Saturdays at through the years and return to their favorite distraction from all that the world brings – hurricanes included.

After last week, it’s time for the conference to unite once more to get back on track as it relates to a mission shared by all the teams. That mission, to regain the conference’s status in the eyes of those who follow the Football Championship Subdivision as the league faces a challenging slate of nonconference games this week.

With Brian Babin back behind center, the passing game is efficient, but I’m not sold yet on Jay Lucas at runningback.

This has to be the most idiotic statement of the year. Where do they find these people????

I'm not sold on Jay Lucas either...I mean I never get to see the guy....he's always running away from the defenses...at a very very fast pace...amassing mucho yards...

What has Jay Lucas done for me this year? Heck, what has he done for you when it comes to running the ball? Averaging 48.7 yards per game and 3.6 yards per carry. Isn't he supposed to be the top RB in the league?

Inconsistent.

11 carries for 37 yards against Alcorn State?!?
9 carries for 21 yards against Mississippi State?
21 carries for 88 yards against South Dakota?

Inconsistent.

Ineffective might be a better adjective for this particular running back, thus far.

Effects of recent storms rip apart SLC schedule

By DAVID MCCOLLUM
LOG CABIN STAFF WRITER

On the Southland Conference's weekly teleconference Tuesday, Nicholls State coach Jay Thomas was asked how he thought his team would fare Saturday against the University of Memphis.

"I have no clue," Thomas said.

This was not the usual gamesmanship or "coach speak."...

Across Southland Conference, football teams feeling hits from hurricanes
By GARY LANEY

Never has Jay Thomas been so happy to see his team practice so poorly.

“We couldn’t run it, we couldn’t throw it, we couldn’t catch it,” the Nicholls State football coach of his team’s Monday practice. “We have no timing.”

That’s not even a complaint, though. It is better to have a bad practice than another day of no practice, Thomas said. Nicholls had only three practices in a 17-day stretch that started with the Hurricane Gustav evacuation, so anything other that the mundane task of hurricane recovery is welcome...

If you did your homework, other than reading a stat line, you would understand why his numbers were down the first two games. But I guess we need to go ahead and cut him and send him on his way since he hasn't convinced you he can play in this league.

I'm not arguing against Lucas after his game vs. us last season...I mean, he only rushed for 216 yards against us alone last season. And we will see him again this season, too.

He's convinced me he can play in this league...or atleast he did last year. We'll see how he does when SLC play begins, but at this point, his strong suit -- his running game -- has been less than impressive.
