Demolition Begins on the New Baseball and Softball Facilities

Oct. 7, 2008

SAN MARCOS - Construction on the new home to Texas State Bobcat baseball and softball has commenced as workers began the demolition stage on the joint complex Tuesday, September 30. The multi-million dollar enhancements project is scheduled for completion in February 2009 for the respective playing seasons of the two sports.

As of now, construction fencing has been erected around both fields in preparation for staging and will remain fenced until completion of construction. Both facility's main seating and press boxes have been removed and power has been cut for both facilities.

Progress on the New Facility

"We are extremely excited to continue to move forward with this project," said Dr. Larry Teis, Texas State Director of Athletics. "I can't tell you how pleased we are with the design of the facility and what it will offer our coaches, athletes and fans. This is a big step in the right direction to continue the success of both programs. Opening the facilities this spring is going to be a special moment for our entire Bobcat community."

The future baseball stadium will nearly double its seating capacity from approximately 1,000 seats to 2,000, including 590 premium-style chair back covered seats flowing down the center of the grandstand and expanding along the bottom rows in a t-shaped pattern. The softball stadium will house 1,000 patrons in a similar fashion, including 267 premium chair backs, with a large portion covered by a cantilever roof. General admission seats will feature improved bench back metal bleachers as well.

Four private suites at the baseball facility and two private suites at softball will flank a new, two-tiered press box of which will be accessible via elevator. The suites will feature various amenities, open-air and indoor seating options, and access to an open-air breezeway along the top section of the grandstand. Information on suite prices can be obtained by contacting Don Coryell at 512.245.2114.

The new two-tiered press box will include individual broadcast booths with wireless internet capabilities and an expanded workspace for print media. Fans will be greeted with a new ticket services center when they enter either stadium with updated amenities such as modern restrooms and an expanded sales area that will feature a novelty shop to purchase Bobcat merchandise. Ticket information will be released shortly from the Bobcat ticket office.

An open plaza with grassy knolls and picnic areas for public use will be located between each facility to provide a fan-friendly atmosphere.

Renovations also extend to the field by transforming both home and visitor dugouts into recessed areas for baseball and softball teams, with a restroom available in the home dugout. Covered batting cages, updated netting and masonry backstops will be added to enhance the facility as well.

"When designing the facility we had four major components that we wanted to see come to life," said Derek Grice, Assistant Director for Facilities and Game Operations. "The number one goal was to make the complex fan-friendly and provide a great game day atmosphere. We wanted an improved facility that would help with player development, we wanted the feasibility for expansion and we wanted a functional space. I think we have accomplished all four with the new baseball and softball facilities."

That's the way we've already had it for a long time.
