THIBODAUX — After years of contention over Nicholls State University’s Confederate mascot, school officials thought they had turned a corner.

The university unveiled a new Colonel logo Thursday, the product of an Ohio graphic-design firm and more than a year of focus groups that included input from students, athletes, faculty, staff and alumni.

The mascot is still called Col. Tillou, inspired by the school’s namesake, Francis Redding Tillou Nicholls, a Confederate army officer and former governor of Louisiana, but he’s been given a modern makeover...

HOUMA — Nicholls State University could be at risk of becoming two-year college or subjected to further drastic cuts, a St. Mary Parish legislator told business and education leaders Thursday in Thibodaux.

State Rep. Sam Jones, D-Franklin, told business and education leaders that the university may be targeted by a new board aimed at making higher education more efficient.

“You’re in trouble,” Jones told the Thibodaux Chamber of Commerce during a luncheon designed to detail the Legislature’s regular session, which concluded in June. “There’s a big bull’s-eye on Nicholls State University.”...
