Southland Conference to Visit Houston Baptist University

MARK BERMAN - Sports Director

HOUSTON - FOX 26 Sports has learned the Southland Conference will make a site visit to Houston Baptist University on Nov. 9.

Sources with knowledge of the situation told FOX 26 if that visit goes well HBU could be invited to join the SLC and the school would accept.

The Southland Conference contingent will be made up of presidents and athletics directors from its member schools.

Houston Baptist is currently a member of the Great West Conference.

School officials have said HBU will begin playing football if the Huskies land in a conference that fits what they are looking for...

Southland adds Oral Roberts, turns focus to Houston Baptist

Oral Roberts University signed on Tuesday as the newest member of the Southland Conference, but the league's commissioner said ORU's addition will have no impact on the potential candidacy of Houston Baptist University to join the SLC.

Conference officials plan to visit HBU on Nov. 9 to meet with university officials, including president Robert Sloan and athletic director Steve Moniaci, said SLC commissioner Tom Burnett. Sloan said earlier this year that HBU, which plays in the Great West Conference, is prepared to add football if it can arrange a conference affiliation.

"We continue to have a conversation with HBU, and we will visit to learn a little more about the university and certainly to discuss its future," Burnett said. "The announcement (of Oral Roberts) certainly doesn't have any adverse effect on anything that relates to HBU or any other potential membership plans."

Oral Roberts, which does not play football, will be the Southland's 10th member for 2012-13 with the departures of Texas State. Texas-San Antonio and Texas-Arlington for the Western Athletic Conference. Eight of the current nine schools play football, and Burnett said nine football schools would be ideal for scheduling.

He said seven to eight schools have contacted the league about membership.

"There's no shortage of interest," Burnett said.

Interesting comments about ULM. I was down there a couple of weeks ago and started to tell Trey that I really thought they would be better served moving back to the SLC but I thought he might take it wrong. I've been to a few games there and they just don't draw well at all. The most recent game was a beautiful early season Saturday game and ther couldn't have been 10K there and our fans were as loud as theirs.

They've made some improvements to the stadium and they are competitive most years now but they would probably draw just as well in the SLC and with the state of LA higher ed funding it probably makes sense.

I would miss the short road trip but if ULM were gone then La. Tech would already have applied for the SBC and as much as I hate La. Tech it would be an even more enjoyable road trip.

Hmm I like the idea of UALR in the southland... as was mentioned on the katfans.com boards. Would make a great rivalry.

Does anyone know what the enrollment at HBU is? I looked at their website and
could not find it. The cost of attending school there is pretty expensive though.
Around $34,000 per year. The site also stated they had a 100 acre campus.

According to their 2011-2012 women's basketball quick facts Houston Baptist Univ. has an enrollment of 2,200. Sharp Gym, where they currently play basketball, only holds 1,000. After being in the place a few seasons ago with Sugar Bears basketball, I'd say that is pretty accurate. It was nothing more than a glorified high school gym with a university's logos on the place. Although, I'd still say it may be cleaner than Stopher Gym in Thibodaux.

And here is their own Q&A about football on their website:

But as we know, a packed 1,000 seat gym is better than a mostly empty 5,000.
Maybe one day we'll need to remove the black sheets and open up all the seating.

Good point Trey, HOPEFULLY that happens November 11 and November 15 when the Sugar Bears host Indiana and Alabama respectively!

Southland Conference makes visit to HBU campus
By JUSTIN SCHNEEWIND, For the Chronicle
Updated 06:37 p.m., Wednesday, November 9, 2011

The Southland Conference's search for members that can add value to the organization led its leaders to a site visit of Houston Baptist University, lured by the school's vision for the future and plans to add a football team.

Southland commissioner Tom Burnett called Wednesday's visit a "very serious step" as the conference considers adding members and cited the university's announcement of its intentions to add football as a primary reason for the visit.

"I think there's no question that part of the reason we're here is the university's interest in playing football," Burnett said. "You could certainly point to that as one of the main reasons we've decided to visit."

The plans for football began with a June announcement that the school would start a football program if it received an invitation from a conference.

President Robert B. Sloan Jr. asserts that HBU could have a team ready as soon as 2013...

Quote:
...With the conclusion of the visit, the Southland's board of directors will vote on offering HBU an extended invitation after the report of the site visit.

Burnett offered no timeline, but he predicts a short process after what was often described as a positive visit.

"We walk away from this with a very positive impression of what we've seen, of what we've heard and what we think the future is here," Burnett said
