An ORU fan here: I've been reading with some interest (and even more confusion) the published reports this weekend that Texas-San Antonio and Texas State are backing out of their planned moves to the WAC, opting instead for C-USA and the Sunbelt conferences, respectively.

Reportedly, though, it wouldn't be until 2013.

No word yet on UTA, but hard to imagine they would follow through on joining a conference that may not even be in existence after this coming school year.

So, where do all three schools wind up playing basketball and baseball this coming season?

If any or all stay in The Southland for one more year, can anyone tell me what that would mean for ORU joining the Southland as planned on July 1, for competition this coming season?

Is there still room for us, literally and figuratively?

Or, have those three schools already screwed the pooch in terms of an additional SC year, and are stuck as independents in basketball (and everything else) this coming school year while they await their 2013 debuts in C-USA/Sunbelt/whatever?

I would think and hope that ORU would be in...no questions asked. UTSA and
Texas State should be the ones on the outside looking in. After all they decided
to jump to the WAC...nobody forced them to leave. Let them play this year as
an independent. Most of, if not all Southland Schedules are probably already
set. I know the UCA football schedule is set and Texas State is not on it.

I dont think the wac dies... it just gets weaker. They will go out and snatch up more 1-AA teams looking to move up.

They're done with the Southland I would imagine. I'm guessing all the sports conference schedules are done for the 2012-13 year. My guess is they would be independent

The WAC is dead, at least as a football conference. They couldn't convince any western FCS schools to move up when the last group left.

Appears that Texas State and UTA are Sun Belt bound. SJSU and USU are moving to MWC. UTSA and maybe La. Tech will move to CUSA. That leaves only NMSU and Idaho for football in the WAC.

There are rumors that the Sun Belt may make a move to add App. State and Ga. Southern and CUSA might invite UNCC.

Personally, I am hopeful the Belt adds App. St. and Ga. Southern if UNT and FIU leave. Those are some FCS powerhouses with great support.

Moving to CUSA would be a great move for UTSA....whether or not deserved the CUSA along with the MAC get pretty good respect for football.....LTU should feel very lucky if they get to CUSA....

TSU will be another W for A-State.....

Welcome to ORU.....

UTSA has played one season against D2 teams and CUSA is a shell of what it once was. They still have USM, Tulsa and ECU but that is about it.

Texas State has almost completed their expansion to 30K seats and improvements. They have a $20 million budget and 30K students so there is a lot of potential.

The MAC is okay but nothing spectacular. A lot of old empty stadiums. They have been around a long time though.

CUSA membership:

1.Tulsa...about 1 million MSA
2. Southern Miss...small MSA of about 150,000
3. UAB...about 1.2 million MSA
4. Rice...Houston..mega MSA
5. UTEP....El Paso...moderate MSA of about 700,000
6. Marshall....Huntington, WV..small MSA of about 300,000
7. East Carolina...Greenville, SC...small MSA of about 200,000
8. Tulane...New Orleans..moderate MSA of about 350,000

New:
9. UTSA...San Antonio..mega MSA

Possible:
10. La Tech...small city...no MSA...
11. North Texas...Dallas...mega MSA
12. Florida International....Miami....mega MSA

Lost:

SMU
UCF
Houston
Memphis

Notes

A-State seems to make more sense than LTU due to access to Memphis tv market....vs Ruston and the Junction City tv market

UCA would also be a good fit if we were further along ....LR tv market about 900,000

I think TX State may be announcing today that they are indeed going to the Sun Belt in 2013.

Texas State to the Sun Belt is official. UTA rumored to be coming to balance travel and UALR as a non-football school.

CUSA is chasing markets and is rumored to be looking at ODU and UNCC for that very reason.

The Sun Belt added Georgia State for that reason but most of us are hoping the final 2 added to get to 12 will be App. State and Ga. Southern. There will be a push to allow NMSU and Idaho back in the conference but those are horrible additions due to geography.

The WAC is done.

They're horrible additions period.

New Mexico State and Idaho were 115 and 118 in attendance last year in FBS. NMSU averaged 15,138 (49.9 percent of their capacity), Idaho averaged just 11,980 (74.9 percent).

App. St. was 1st in FCS at 26,211 (130.1 percent), and Georgia Southern was 11th at 17,701 (98.3 percent).

New Mexico State would have been 17th in FCS in attendance, Idaho 29th.

Not only are App St. and Georgia So. better geographical fits, but they're better programs and seem to have better support.

Idaho has no business in FBS. Personally, I think adding App. St. and Ga. Southern is a no brainer and will help the Sun Belt move past CUSA and the MAC.

Actually I think A-State could make a pretty good case to the Big 12 ...maybe after Gus has an impact and gets some national attention.... Jonesboro looks a lot like some Big 12 cities...Ames, Stillwater, Norman, Manhattan...nice size standalone city plus JB has access to Memphis market .....Ames has Des Moines which is not as attractive as Memphis for tv.....small school size vs most Big 12 schools is a downside.....plus they get crushed in other sports......
