Energy states other than Texas have plenty of budget woes......Texas just has such a strong economy other than energy so far.........I have been surprised that Nicholls has survived this long.........of course, Illinois is about to crater their universities not for energy woes but just chronic legislative largesse that is quickly catching up with them.......let's hope LA gets this figured out...........

Energy woes did not create Louisiana's problems. Their deficit was huge before the oil market dropped. Jindal cut taxes drastically and refused to raise them much like Kansas and it killed their budget. The oil market just made it worse.

The Southland wouldn't be in trouble..just the schools in Louisiana. Which would make it a Texas - Arkansas conference. Plus those cutbacks would send talent to those two states...improving both UCA and the Texas schools. But hopefully this is all posturing by the gov.

I'm sure some of these schools are in trouble budget wise, but this seems to come up all the time around election season. Trying to sway votes for one party or the other. Just like this guy trying to merge UCA into the ASU system...he's just doing what's best for education in Arkansas.

No offense to ASU fans...but UCA doesn't NEED to be combined with ASU. UCA isn't in financial trouble. It's got an expanding Online program. It's business school and nursing program and PT/OT programs are nationally known. Plus its athletic programs are pretty inexpensive compared to the overall budget. It just doesn't fit.
