CAA's Yeager takes a swing at FBS

Quote:
Colonial Athletic Association commissioner Tom Yeager pivoted from Wednesday’s happy talk in Baltimore for a darned fine five-minute rant that was part warning, part plea. The subject was schools jumping from the Football Championship Subdivision to the Bowl Subdivision.

To summarize, his message was: You’ll spend more, you’ll win less, and at the end of the day, you will never never never be considered a peer of schools in the five power conferences, who are working overtly and covertly to exclude you from whatever playoff and money grab comes next.

Want more.

Great post Josh,

I do love a good rant when data supports it. Very interesting that only Boise State has really been successfull since moving up, and even they have not been invited to a premier conference. No doubt about it the premeir conferences have no intention of inviting the likes of StAte, APPY, Troy, etc...

Northwest Piggy college runs the same defence, by not scheduling us. At the end of the day, I only support moving up if we had a financial backer like Oklahoma State has in T-Boone Pickens. Without someone of that caliber - we should remain in Southland for forseeable future.

He is angry because the CAA is falling apart and their top program is about to jump to FBS as soon as they find a home.

The "split" isn't going to be as some people think. It is about governance and the teams in FBS plus the top couple of basketball conferences will comprise the "new" division. The big 5 will share just enough revenue that it will make it worthwhile to stay in and they will still have non-conference opponents as they do now. The big boys will have veto power but they essentially call the shots already.

I can't imagine any school regrets moving up and you don't lose money or prestige doing it or programs like App. State, Ga. Southern, WKU, etc. would not do it. The last handful of FCS programs that can put 20K or so in the stands are looking to move up with the exception of the ones out west who don't really have a place to go.

We are heading to an "FBS' where the lower 5 will get a couple of playoff spots when they expand and will play each other in bowl games. It isn't really a lot different than what we have now except that there will be playoffs instead of the stupid BCA system.
