Does anyone know if the Southland intends to offer athletes stipends to reach the full cost of attendance when autonomy likely passes? There are a lot of details and specifics about the amounts and which sports will be covered (brings in Title 9, etc.) but it appears that all of the FBS conferences and the top few non-football leagues will offer stipends and other benefits.

I am curious to see how it impacts sports like basketball and baseball since the division for those sports is so large. There could be a big impact if half the schools in D1 basketball and baseball offer stipends and half don't.

I doubt any of us could afford to do that.

What if it were just headcount sports, which would exclude football?

I don't know where any of the small schools will find the money to pay athlete stipends. We do not make money like the big schools. I was happy with my partial scholarship. I don't know why the NCAA and larger schools are giving into paying their athletes.

The only way to counteract this problem for schools such as UCA
would be to give out 63 full scholarships and not split them anymore.
Then hope for some quality walk on guys to fill out the roster.

Tuition, room and board and books. That's a full ride IMO.

They may need to bring back the athletic dorm like in my time...
It seemed to work well.

I don't see where it is the responsibility of the universities to give these
guys walking around money.

Maybe they need to get a job in the summer like I did to have extra money
For whatever they deem worthy.

Sad part is the lower conference FBS schools who get left out the P5 will eventually be at the same level as FCS schools as the P5 get richer and start excluding them. Sorry, but that's business Sun Belt fans. You may not want to be left behind but they have outgrown you and now are making the rules and deciding your fate. The money talks and you will walk....or they will and leave you behind anyway.

That's why I enjoy UCA playing at a level where most of our rivals are in the same financial boat. Even if we don't fill the stands and are considered, for now, money games and Ws for upper level FBS teams. It's great football that won't be decided by voters in money conferences who have agendas but rather teams on a field who have goals.

That is not true for the foreseeable future. The gap is likely to widen between all FBS and FCS unfortunately. The P5 don't want to break up FBS or they would have done so. They want to prevent lawsuits and will pay a max if $5000 a year to athletes plus other benefits. The SBC has already committed to doing the same and the new CFP directs more money to the G5 so they can provide benefits and preserve the FBS.

The price tag for a guarantee game in FBS is going to rise. The playoff money is five times the money we received from the BCS. We are breaking ground on a huge new pressbox and suites that will generate more revenue than our current ticket sales. It is possible that a fe FBS programs could opt out but ASU won't be one. App. St., ODU, Ga So and others know what us coming and they moved to FBS.

I believe FCS football will go in but likely without the transfers but basketball and baseball face some tough decisions on stipends without the extra revenue.

A lot of company line out there but I did find an article from an interview with the Wichita State AD that seems a little more honest.

Liberty has announced they will be awarding stipends in the $4,000 range to all their athletes. They have a ton more revenue than the average program but it will be interesting to see ho it plays out in the FCS ranks. I cannot imagine that JMU or any FCS in their region are thrilled to have to compete with that recruiting advantage.
