UCA@Nicholls

UCA 33+47+9=89 (7-7/8-19)
NSU 36+44+16=96 (5-8/12-15)

Hard, hard loss.........so close to the win in regulation............not the time to get into a run and gun on the road.......Brooks ends up with a strong 25/7/3......Howard at 22/4/4.......Schmit (10/11), Parnell and Unruh in double figures........get ready for UNO on Sat ta 4pm in NOLA...........Go Bears!!

Coach: Just chewed team out as we were too casual at last time out.......just did not execute the last play in regulation and get the foul to keep them from shooting a 3.......then got deflated going into OT and could not get back up........... I did not communicate the last pay well enough.......we were not up to par at start of game.......Kamba was injured in H2 and not available.......UNO has been resting this week and we went to OT....UNO is awfully good team but we can go in to get an upset...........

H2: Headed to OT at 80 all.........Colonels hit late 3 to tie..........shot better at 38% v 49% FGs and 41% v 44% 3s.......+12 rebs......81% v 78% FTs....Brooks with 22 and Howard 20...Go Bears!!

H1: Shooting poorly...........33% v 50% FGs.....21% vs 33% 3s.........100% FTs but only 6 attempts..........rebs about even at 20 v 19......even winning TOs 6 v 10.....leading to 12 points for Bears......no one in double figures but 7 have scored as Howard has 8 and Kamba and Schmit each have 6.....still OK but need to shoot better.......and slow down points in paint by Colonels........

Thanks for the post JRK....We all have seen Russ chew the team out for being casual...and rightfully so. This team doesn't play consistently with the urgency that I would like, but it is SO much better than it use to be.

I don't know if many of you have been to the Thib for a basketball, but it is just a horrible facility for basketball. Anyway, time to move on up the road to New Orleans. We have our work cut out for us there. Go Bears!!!!!

@UNO

UCA 24-37=61 (7-8/8-20)
UNO 38-46=84 11-3/16-9)

Pretty good beat down..........36% v 45% FGs........21% v 50% for 3s.......Howard had no made 3s......67% v80% FTs......not a good shooting day.........32 v 45 rebs......Brooks a nice 14/7....Unruh had 12......

Got to regroup and strong to the finish.......

Coach: Left a lot back at Nicholls.......was not over it today............got to go to work to beat SLU that we are going to head to head against in standings......when teams defend Howard close others have to step up........

UCA@SLU

UCA 29-41=70 (7-9/8-21)
SLU 46-41=87 (8-8/15-14)

Never really in this one after the 18-2 run............got down by 27 then closed to 10 .........shot better in H2 getting to 48% 3s (10 made)......even got to +8 o-rebs........only 7 TOs..........had a 15-0 run but just too far back to make it up.....Howard led with 17...Unruh tallied 12 and Parnell a very nice 13.......hope this loss is not what keeps us from tourney......still need a win but not an easy row to hoe with SFA on Sat then last place Northwestern on the road in a trap game.....positive was bench with 42 points..........time to take a deep breadth, sleep on the way home and get to work for a win against Jacks.........Go Bears!!!

Coach: Just did not play very well.........very disappointed......Lions scored on first five possessions with little resistance... not doing the little things to win.......maybe the bench needs to be the starters.........got to have more on court leadership .....

H1: Bears behind in FGs by 31% v 60%.............26% v 50% 3s.......at least shootings FTs well 83% v 50% but only 6 trips to the line...........+3 rebs........each team only had 5 TOs..........Howard has 9 and Unruh 7.Schmit has 4 rebs.......Lions had a 18-2 run in H1 to get the lead............long way to go to crawl back into this one.........

SFA@UCA

SFA 33-41-16=90, OT
UCA 38-36-11=85

Tough, tough loss.........back and forth game.....Bears led by 13 late but could not hit FTs.....15/32 overall...........held our own with rebs.........both teams shot 47% FGs.......TOs about even......21 point swing from 13 up to 8 down then fought back to tie in OT but could not hit FTs when really needed.......Seniors ---- Brooks 15/7/5......Lowery 7/3/6.....Others -- Kamba 18/9..........Unruh 17/5......Howard 16/5/2...........

Tourney chances now comes down to last game next Sat at Demons who beat UNO today.... Go Bears!!

Coach: SFA is a good team......we played well and hard and good enough to win...........played good defense............we have the tools and just have to execute.....going to keep at it..........

Northwestern State beats UNO , 83-82 at Natch
Nicholls downs SLU, 77-71 at Thib

Lots of chances to win this game and no doubt the team hurts for letting it get away. They will grow from it and get stronger. Free throws.......sometimes the ball just won't go in the basket and the basket seems to get smaller as the game goes on. Not sure what it was yesterday, but the whole Bear team sure struggled hitting them.

I never would have thought this team would leave a game on the court due to missing so many FTs.....avg 72% on the season...........only 47% yesterday...wow....

@Northwestern State

UCA 36-47=83 (7-11/8-23)
NWS 57-40=97 (7-11/13-16)

H2: Outshot today 62% to 43% FGs..........each team made 11 3s.......Demons +10 of FTs..........Kamba had a terrific H2 ending up with 24/6........Howard ends with 18/4/3.........Wiedenaar 11 points in only 19 minutes......no one else more than 8......NWS Zeke Woodley being back in the line up was a difference maker with 25 points on 64% FGs and 9/9 FTs.........

H1: Trail 57-36 at half...........very steep hill...........37% vs 58% FGs.............at least picking up 3s at 8/15............Howard and Weidenaar each have 9 with 3 3s each..........

Bears down 22-11 mid way H1.............only 31% FGs........that's not the way to Katy.................

Bears wind up in a 5 way tie for 8th and win the tiebreaker...
I would like to see that scenario...

Congrats on making the tourney... =D>

To be honest I have mixed emotions.

Part of me is happy the two seniors get st least one more game while part of me is ready to move on to the next chapter of UCA MBB.

Something has got to change with the way we play defense and rebound. We need more physical players who can finish games.

At any rate-Go Bears!

Hard way to get to the tourney but glad for the team. We were so close to being 11-7 (or better) this season.

Play hard for 40 minutes and they have a pretty high ceiling.

Play Kats Tuesday at 5pm.

Go Bears!!!

Explanation from SLC Commissioner of 8th place tiebreaker:
http://www.southland.org/news/2017/3/4/MBB_0304173715.aspx

"In the review of the five-way 7-11 finish in the Southland Conference men's basketball tournament tie-breaker process, a step was overlooked in the advance information shared by the Conference office before today's final regular-season games.

Nicholls and Central Arkansas were advanced from the five-way comparison to a head-to-head comparison. In that scenario, the teams were compared with the teams they both played twice, in order from top to bottom.

Both teams were 0-2 against New Orleans, and both were 1-1 against Southeastern Louisiana. The original information shared Friday indicated the tie could not be broken at this point, and that Nicholls won the tie-breaker in a subsequent comparison.

This was incorrect.

There was an additional team that both Nicholls and UCA played twice that should have been compared with: Northwestern State. UCA was 1-1 vs. Northwestern and Nicholls was 0-2 vs. Northwestern.

Thus UCA gets the seeding advantage, and the No. 8 tournament seed, over Nicholls.

The Southland Conference greatly regrets the oversight that, even after multiple reviews, led to inaccurate information provided to both the Nicholls and UCA basketball programs, the media and public."

Updated 7-11 Tiebreaking Process (utilized to determine NO. 8 seed)

7-11, NIC, ACU, UCA, UIW, NSU
Tournament Seeding Process Order:

a) If three (3) or more teams tie for a position, and the tied teams all played two games against one another, the combined record of each of the tied teams against the other teams involved in the tie shall be compared until a seeding advantage is gained.

Vs. other tied teams: NIC 4-3, ACU 1-5, UCA 4-3, UIW 4-2, NSU 3-3. Tied teams did not play each other twice. Cannot break seeding tie.

b) If three (3) or more teams tie for a position, and if the teams combined to split their regular season games against one another, or if they played an uneven number of games against one another, then the tied teams’ won-loss results against the next highest-positioned team(s) they all played twice shall be compared. This shall be continued through the final standings until one (1) team gains the advantage, thus the higher seed.

NIC, ACU, UCA, UIW, NSU all played the following teams (in order of finish) twice:
None; Cannot break tie.

c) If three (3) or more teams remain tied for a position, regardless of the number of games played against the other tied teams, any won-loss advantage in the combined pool of tied teams shall be used as a seeding tie-breaker. This shall continue through the order of final standings if necessary.

Refer to a) above: NIC 4-3, ACU 1-5, UCA 4-3, UIW 4-2, NSU 3-3; UIW gets seeding preference.
UIW holds place for No. 8 seed
NIC and UCA at 4-3 revert to two-way tie-breaker:
NIC and UCA two-way tiebreaker:
a) If two (2) teams tie for a position, and one (1) team holds a head-to-head win-loss advantage after two games against one another, that team receives the higher seed. NIC and UCA split games 1-1; cannot break seeding tie.

b) If two (2) teams tie for a position, and if the teams split their regular season games, or if they only played one game against each other, then the tied teams’ won-loss results against the highest positioned team(s) they both played twice shall be compared. This shall be continued through the final standings until one (1) team gains the advantage, thus the higher seed.
Vs. highest-positioned teams both played twice:
Vs. UNO: NIC: 0-2, UCA 0-2; Cannot break seeding tie.
Vs. SLU: NIC: 1-1, UCA 1-1; Cannot break seeding tie.
Vs. NSU: NIC 0-2, UCA 1-1; UCA wins seeding tie-breaker.
UCA is No. 8 seed

Tournament field is complete; no further steps taken.c)

Other steps , if needed.

In the event a tie cannot be broken in this manner, the tied team that holds a won-loss advantage against the other tied team, regardless of the number of games played, shall receive the higher seed.
NIC and UCA split games 1-1; cannot break seeding tie.
d) In the event a tie cannot be broken in this manner, the tied team that holds a won-loss advantage against the highest-positioned team(s), regardless of the number of times played, shall receive the higher seed. This shall be continued through the final standings until one (1) team gains the advantage, thus the higher seed.
Vs. highest-positioned teams both played, regardless of times played:
Vs. SFA: NIC: 0-1; UCA: 0-2; NIC wins seeding tie-breaker.
NIC is No. 8 seed
Tournament field is complete; no further steps taken.
