Peay 31 - UCA 13 (missed XP and not 2 FGs)

hopefully beat linden wood, but i’m mot sure where another win comes from. North AL? 3 win season in brown’s 5th year. Not the desired direction…

UCA remaining opponents ranked in order of Sagarin ratings as of 9/26/22 (record and SOS in parens):

(Note - homefield is 2-point advantage)

58 - APU (4-1, 251).....APU by 6
55 - JSU (4-1, 234)....JSU by 3
53 - @ EKU (2-2, 158)....EKU by 5
50 - UCA (1-3, 144)
48 - @ Kennesaw State (1-2, 124)....KSU by 1
44 - @ SFA (2-2, 174) ... UCA by 4
39 - UNA (1-3, 191).....UCA by 13
30 - Lindenwood (3-1, 151) ... UCA by 22

If the ratings above hold it shows UCA favored in 3 games and opponents in 4....all 4 of the predicted losses are shown as close games...admittedly the ratings have a limited sample size at this point...

Note that UCA and KSU have had the highest SOS so far.....that factors into wins/losses.....probably affects the ratings to a degree but SOS is supposed to take that into account to a degree...

UCA rating is higher than all WAC teams except SHS....first we have to get to 6 wins....that does not seem likely to get an AQ spot in playoffs...therefore, need to get to at least 7 wins but SOS will fall as most opponents are lower than UCA and none much higher...as with any season the thing to do is win games....Go Bears!!

APU Upperclassmen Roster Summary:

TE: 2 ...one is 6'7 240....transfer from FCS Campbell
OL: 5 ...all transfers including from A-State, Central Michigan and ULM....avg 6'3 288 with one at 6'8' 345...

DE/DL: 8 in total.....6 transfers from Mississippi State, Tennesse State (2), Akron and NC Central ....avg 6'2 275.....one at 6'2 at 331....
LB: 4 in total....avg 6'1 216.....
DB: 10 in total....8 transfers including LSU, Ole Miss, Georgia Tech, South Alabama and Youngstown State....another from SAU (former teammate of starting UCA DE David Walker?) .... range from 5'8 169 6'4 202.....most in the 5'11 area....

APU is 4-1 with wins blowout wins over Presbyterian and Mississippi Valley....another solid win over Alabama State and last week's strong win over EKU.....only loss was to Western Kentucky by 11 in opening game...note that Hill Toppers are now 3-1 with easy wins over Hawaii and FIU and a 3 point OT loss to Big 12 Indiana on the road.....the win over EKU is probably the best to look at stats....Governors trailed 20-3 at half and scored 21 in Q4 to complete the comeback for a 31-20 win....

APU/EKU:
Rush:53-322 (358 gross) vs 24-116 (124 gross)
Pass: 17-33-172-1TD-2INT vs 21-36-213-1-1
Total Offense: 494 vs 339
3rd down%: 11 for 20 vs 3 for 14
4th down%: 1 of 2 vs 0 for 1
Redzone scores: 3 for 3 vs 2 for 3
Sacks: 1 for 3 vs 2 for 9
INT: 1 vs 2

Season stats for kicking:
PATs: 25 of 25
FGs: 5 of 6, long 49
Punts: 43 avg, long 57, 7 inside 20, 6 fair catches
Punt returns: avg 13 yds, long 28
KO returns: avg 20, long 28

Top rushers:
QB Mike DiLiello 58-304 (458 gross), 6 TDs ... ran for 181 vs EKU
CJ Evans 68-305 (326 gross), 2 TDs
Jevon Jackson 56-348 (353 gross), 1 TD

Top receivers:
Drae McCray 31-421, 5 TDs, long 44
James Burns 17-261, 3 TDs, long 58
Trey Goodman 15-202, 4 TDs, long 37

Top passers:
QB Mike DiLiello 81-135-1032, 14 TDs, long 58

Note total passes attempted is 156 for 1118...6 different players have thrown at least 1 pass....

Defense:

3 with >20 tackles led by Antoine Williams (#15 LB, 5'10 196, RSOPH) with 41 ...team has 6 INTs, 26 breakups and 27 QB Hurries....gave up only 13 points to EKU as EKU had a 42yd INT pick 6....held EKU to 116 net rush yards of which 44 was to EKU QB Parker McKinney who we know well....otherwise McKinney was 6-18....Kory Chapman 13 tackles vs EKU....

Comparison to UCA:

We know about EKU and how good they are......and APU scored 21 in Q4 to come from behind for the win.....that alone shows that APU is very good...

QB: Edge to APU....stop Diniello from running (or at least slow him down) and a good chuck of their offense is at risk....we had a rough time slowing the Mo State QB (and so did uaf) so we have to be better than that performance....SEMO QB also have us fits..... solid run attack so it is not just stopping the QB...McElvain seemed to be more comfortable last week at SEMO so a breakout game maybe needed for Bears win....

RBs: Excluding the QBs, slight edge to UCA with The Triplets... and their versatility in run, catch and pass....APU knows this well so we will have to be creative in play calling and hold our blocks longer...

TEs: Even....neither team seems to used a lot but each have credible talent...hoping Austin E has some good catches tomorrow...

OL: Even ...UCA looks 15+ bigger....APU has transfers with experience...this may where the game is won or lost.....at least heat should not be an issue with the big guys tomorrow

WRs: Slight edge to UCA but it will take a better day than we have had so far....hope Richmond is back at least 90%.....his speed is key...

DL: Even..UCA a bit bigger but APU looks quite deep...UCA DE Jessup, Walker and et al have to set the edge solid this week....while still getting some pressure

LB: Even.....both seem to have solid players

DB: Edge to APU for their apparent depth and experience via transfers....UCA DBs will be busy in coverage with an eye on QB runs....need sure tackling....

Special Teams: Edge to APU....punting looks about even as do KOs...we have trouble with PATs/FGs and APU has been pretty solid...I assume Ray has had some physical issue affecting his place kicks and hoping he gets back into to form this game...GOT to clean up kick returns...you can make an argument this alone cost us the game vs Mo State and SEMO given the impact on momentum....

There is no doubt we have played a very tough opening four games.....3 against Top 25 teams plus a long road trip to Pocatello and some altitude....APU schedule has not been so demanding but 1-1 vs WKU and EKU is notable.....

Prediction.......I root for UCA but unless we get it up another solid notch in all phases (and not just an improvement) this could be a long afternoon...the Bears should be well-motivated and this may be the best team remaining on the schedule and a win counts for a lot if we get to 7 wins and the committee is trying to decide on at-large teams......

APU by 28-20....with a long shot for a 20-17 UCA win....

Go Bears!!

Great analysis as always JRK..

Not sure the Bears can generate enough offense
to overcome Peay….especially if they start slowly
as usual. Hopefully I’m wrong, but we will see.
Hate the thought of being 1-4.

Just got home from the game so have to look at stats tomorrow...my initial impression was:

The Good
> Defense was awesome.....our 1s/2s only gave up one score.....pretty stout....
> McElvain made some excellent long throws to a number of receivers
> Ray nailed his PATs ....7 for 7
> Hale really punished the opponent even when not getting much yards....glad to see him break a long TD run...
> Richmond looking recovered...not sure APU respected him early

The Not so Good
> 92 yd punt return for TD.... this has got to get fixed....Caughron kicked the ball into the corner of the field..all I can think is the gunners expected the APU receiver to fair catch and let up...after he got thru the 3-4 defenders it was off to the races
> The O-line has got to do better more consistently....the first drive of the game and the first two of H2 they were very good....we really need to be able to run the ball and chew up clock...I take it the halftime "pep talk" to o-line was not fun.....
> Offense seemed not to figure out how to defeat 7-8 in the box other than long sideline passes....

Questionable
> McElvain still in game very late...backup needs game experience..at least Will not taking chances then running...
> Really question APU's coach for leaving his #1 QB in game down by 29 with a minute....looked like padding stats vs our 3s....lucky the QB did not get whacked and injured ...
> Lack of creative use of TEs....I saw 6-7 cases when we had a TE in the game and I told some one we are running behind the TE...which we did....APU knew that also...

Maybe more later but for now Bears win big against a (soon to be unranked) ranked team!!!! Go Bears!!

It’s good to be wrong sometimes….

Explosive second half from the Bears.
Hopefully this will be the much needed
confidence boost this team needed going
forward.

GOVS-BEARS POSTGAME QUOTES
Austin Peay head coach Scotty Walden

· Opening statement… "First off, give UCA a lot of credit. I think they played a phenomenal game. They played really stingy and physical on defense. I think they just played harder than us, and that's on me. I've got to have our guys prepared to play. We had a great week of practice, and I'm really just trying to recall and go back and pinpoint because this is a very uncharacteristic game. I think that the emotions of last week's game, and those factors, I think kind of showed up today. I think last week's game was a real physical one, and we just looked a step slow today. I don't know necessarily where that came from. Overall just give UCA credit. I think UCA played a phenomenal game. I think their quarterback played really well. They did a great job of winning their one-on-ones, and we didn't. Their defensive line played really hard. They out-physicalled us, and we weren't able to run the ball, and when you can't run the ball, you become one-dimensional. Especially when we have a third-quarter like we had, where things really went south, kind of put us in a passing situation where we had to drop back pass Mike. They were teeing off and double-covering our guys. So, anyway, just have to give them credit."

On the third quarter… "That thing was like a blur. I felt like anything that could go wrong, did go wrong. We talk about winning the middle eight, which for us is the last four minutes of the first half and the first four minutes of the second half. We won the last four minutes. Our offensive finally got a drive going. We ran 40 plays in the first half, but we've got to execute in the red zone better. We got the ball down there, we kick the field goal, and it's 7-6, a one-point game. We feel confident our defense is going to get a stop, but we didn't. They hit a Give UCA credit. They came out and executed.big-time ball, an explosive pass on us down the field, and that led to a touchdown. After that, we got the ball back, but we gave our defense a short field, and we can't do that."

On changing his mind whether or not to go for it on fourth and short… "Yeah, I probably would, to be honest. Not because of the outcome of the game. I just felt very confident in our offense and defense. I felt like we had the look we wanted. They didn't bring a blitz there. They went double edge, which they've shown the whole time. We had a hat on a hat, but those four down linemen played their tails off, and I give those guys credit. I probably would punt the ball there and give our defense better field position. That was kind of one I wanted back."

Austin Peay quarterback Mike DiLiello

On the inability to get the offense going… "We really didn't get into a rhythm tonight. We have to get going, and when we did get going, we got stuffed in the red zone a couple of times. You're not going to win football games doing that. You have to score touchdowns in the red zone. You have to give those guys credit, especially up front. They were big, physical dudes. They pressured us and stuffed our run game pretty good early on and continued to do so throughout the rest of the game. At the end of the day, it's a tough loss for us, but the good thing for us is we're going into the bye week. We can regroup, get some guys healthy, and get ready for Murray State.

On the difficulty running the ball… "They're a smart football team, and they knew we were going to try and run the football with all our backs and myself included. They did a good job. They mixed up coverages, nothing we weren't expecting, but like I said, it's all about getting into a rhythm for us and finding that tempo, and we really couldn't do that. When that doesn't happen for our offense, we struggle a little bit, but needless to say, they made some good plays on defense."

On needing to sustain drives… "That could some up the entire game. We didn't convert on third down a lot. When you look at previous games, we've had a lot of success, over 45, 50 percent completions on third down. We have to keep drives alive. We have to keep the chains moving and keep the opponent's defense on the field. That's when we're at our best on offense, but we didn't do that tonight. That just goes to miscommunication up front, me not completing balls, and not making the right checks on certain things. We just have to get back to the drawing board and figure it all out."

APU had four defenders with at least 6 tackles....including team leader Antoine Willaims who had 6 with one TFL...

Charles had 1.5 TFL and one sack....Jake Golday had 8.....Logan Jessup and Corley Hooper each had 7....Jessup had 3 TFL and 1.5 sacks...Walker and Davenport each had 6 tackles....DEs and LBs did a fine job defending the edge.....I noticed we used a lot of 3 down including the DEs with what looked like an extra LB or CB...

Hayden Ray was 7/7 PATs and all were boomers.... Jake Ward put 3 KOs in the EZ and several sky kicks that were fair caught about the 30...Caughron was solid punting with 2 inside 20.....wind on a couple were a factor as there were some gusts.....the one returned for a TD was well kicked inside the 10 and plenty high for coverage to get in place...it was also kicked into the "corner" of the zone yet the gunners still could not get a hand on the receiver....Richmond's 35 yd KO return was huge to start H2....

On to Lindenwood...Go Bears!!
