They also said that if UCA was to become a member, that the soccer team would most likely have to go either independent or play in another league b/c none of the schools in the conference have soccer programs

Big story in the DemGaz today about the SLC.
UCA got top billing on the front page of the sports section. There's a photo of three SLC officials viewing the football field from the pressbox and then inside a photo of them inside the Pepsi Center.

To read the story, go to the NewsStand. It is the DemGaz site, so you must have a password.

Those numbers are optimistic.

Assuming UCA will fund its sports scholarships close to Division limits, the scholarship costs alone will account for a $500,000. Travel expenses will go up with no short trips and more overnight stays.

As noted earlier, an NCAA study found that moving from Division II to Division I raises expenditures more like $3.5 million.

According to the DemGaz today, the numbers that Last Bear quoted are the average budgets for SLC schools.

"Burnett said his estimation was that an average athletic budget of schools in the Southland Conference was $4 million to $5 million."

And they also mentioned that UCA's currect budget was 4.5 million.

This is my own opinion now: It's kinda sad though....because we are taking away several things (not mentioning now) just to get to Div I. I don't think we are ready for that. That's ridiculous and it will eventually hit students that want to come to school here but can't because of $$. We may have a great enrollment but it won't last. I may be wrong........

Well see the thing that gets me is that when we make the move to Div. I, we will not be able to compete in any type of championship... I mean really who wants to compete for a school who is not getting to play for something. I guess where I am going with this is that these guys practice everyday during their season and even in their offseason and yet all their playing for is a win/loss record. I think we're going to lose people b/c of that.

In D1 you have the same opportunities to play in NCAA playoffs as you do in D2. Even football has a playoff. I hope ya'll get into the SLC. It will be good to see that conf. back in the state. Quite a bit different than when ASU was in it but good luck. They do play some salty football.

Osage, I think he meant during the "transition" we will have several years where we can not compete for championships, thus making the transition that much more difficult.

TAMU-CC Update

Apparently the SLC has some reservations about Corpus Christi. This article makes it sound like it will be a requirement for them to add football.

Very interesting, but in the article it said that they were going to have to upgrade the baseball and softball complex and add football... If I remember correctly they have pretty nice facilities. If they have to upgrade, what can of change will we need to do!

I believe that our facilities (especially softball) are much better than theirs. (I don't even see a scoreboard at either field!) Although I agree that they baseball field could use some major improvements.

I agree with Josh. They seem to have nice "fields," but there doesn't appear to be a scoreboard or pressbox (I know the complaints about the UCA baseball pressobx) at either field.
I did really appreciate the exquisite mowing done on the softball field. If I could get my lawn to look like that, that'd be awesome.

it looks like part of that facilities upgrade at TAMU-CC, might need to include lights....

The August edition of "Ask the Commish" is in the newsstand.
UCA gets several mentions, but no big news really talked about.

(Also, check out the EchoSports exclusive. It's also in the NewsStand...)
