According to Sterlington coach Mike Collins, UL-Lafayette and Arkansas Tech have shown significant interest in tailback DeShanti Mitchell.
The two schools no doubt took note of another four-figure rushing season by the Sterlington senior in 2007. Mitchell recorded 1,100 yards on 159 carries in 2007 and rushed for more than 1,300 yards and 15 touchdowns in 2006.
UL-Lafayette is also pursuing Mitchell's teammate
Tori Williams. Williams — a 6-3, 190-pound wide receiver — notched 56 catches on the season and has drawn the attention of the University of Central Arkansas and the University of Southern Mississippi as well.
With tight end Matt Branch already committing to national champion LSU, Sterlington coach Mike Collins had expected a bit more local recruiting love for the other big-time players on the Panthers squad.
"DeShanti's been great all four years," Collins said with frustration in his voice.
"A coach from Oklahoma put a stamp on Tori and thought he was a great Division-I prospect. UCA says he's the best receiver they've seen in two years. It looks like they're both going to qualify academically, and they're both good kids."
