Student Uses Facebook to Provide News of Shooting at University of Central Arkansas

Millions of college students use Facebook every day. Senior journalism student Mark Oliver discovered another use for the social networking site on Oct. 26, 2008. Oliver used Facebook to provide students, family members and the general public with instant news after the shooting at the University of Central Arkansas that Sunday night. "You talk about your responsibilities as a journalist in class," Oliver said. "But you don't ever expect to be thrust into a news situation. Everything you learn in class comes out. It may not register in class, but it comes out when you have that kind of experience."
