States gives funds for improvement

States gives funds for improvement
By Nathan Noble - September 8th, 2010

UCA was given $712,000 by the State of Arkansas through Sen. Gilbert Baker in General Improvement Funds that will be used for travel, professional development and building reserves.
$300,000 of the amount given has been allocated to be dispersed among faculty improvements while the rest will be put into the university’s fund balance.
Vice President of Finance Diane Newton said that it is not uncommon for funds to be given to universities on the last day of the fiscal year by the state.
“At the end of the year the state has a lot of left over money at their disposal and we are glad to have it,” Newton said. “It’s going to be a big help.”

Interior design classes remodel campus buildings

Quote:
The interior design program made changes to jazz up several buildings around campus this past spring semester.
Both of the Bernard Hall lobbies and three suites in the Burdick Hall were remodeled to make them more modern.
In the summer of 2009, Bernard Hall Resident Coordinator LaVel Heintz contacted K.C. Poole, an instructor of interior design, and asked her if students could redesign both of the lobbies in the dorm areas of the building.

Trustees violate Freedom of Information Act … again

Quote:
Three years ago, the UCA Board of Trustees held a private meeting in which the illegal payment of $300,000 to then-President Lou Hardin was approved. Because of the illegal meeting, which violated the Freedom of Information Act, the university and members of the board are still under investigation.
You’d have thought the board members would have learned their lessons.
Apparently, though, that wasn’t the case. On Aug. 20, the board held an executive session where members discussed a part of the report by the Higher Learning Commission accreditation board that has some harsh views on UCA Board of Trustees Chairman Harold D. Chakales and the board as a whole. Under Arkansas state law, the content of executive sessions must be made public before the meeting, and executive sessions are “permitted only for the purpose of considering employment, appointment, promotion, demotion, disciplining, or resignation of any public officer or employee.”
This discussion was none of those.
What the trustees discussed wasn’t groundbreaking, but certainly reflects poorly on the board. The accreditation group apparently wasn’t impressed by Chakales’ behavior and knowledge of the university, and said so in their report. The report also expressed the accrediting group’s concern over the board’s understanding of the goals set by the university.
The university and administration are on the right track, finally. The board should take this criticism and try for a fresh start. The university community can’t afford for the board to fail it again.

Oh Dear......

After a long drive down the field, sophomore runningback Terrence Bobo scored off of a 10-yard rush and Carmona’s kick was good, making the score 21-14. The game was scoreless through the rest of the half.

The Vikings were the first to score during the second half with a field goal. With 6:17 left in the third quarter, Vikings kicker Devon Pike attempted a goal from the 22-yard line and it was good making the score 27-17 with the Bears still in the lead.

Somehow the halftime score..according to the Echo..was 21 to 14...and with the Vikings able to score FIRST in the second half...it magically went to 27 -17!

It's ok to make journalistic mistakes in college, but seriously folks this kind of LAZY reporting is horrible. For a sports editor to allow this to go to print (electronic) tells me that individual has no real ambition. [-X I was able to see that stat correctly in under 30 seconds via a search on ucasports! Thirteen editors on staff, varying in emphasis, and NOONE caught this? Very little research to do there! If the Echo is the training ground for our future journalists, then take some initiative and be an editor that actually checks facts not one that just publishes to fill white space! Sad.

Or it could be the first mistake the kid has made...

The UhOh also reported that BoT member Harding testified before the grand jury on Tues. Not so. It was postponed to Wed. I see they also printed the F word in Julie's column. Classy.

As a former high school sports writer without all the electronic livestats and goodies they have today, had we done this sort of junk we would have been explaining to the football coach while we did fingertip pushbacks why we are so stupid....then we would have enjoyed doing stadium laps while singing "we will not be stupid anymore".....
