...For the next week, we'll conduct our own unofficial poll among whoever has access to this column.
Voting begins now.
A few ground rules:
1. The athlete or sports star must be living.
2. He must be active in a sport. I'm not allowing broadcasters, talk show hosts, general managers, athletic directors or other peripheral folks.
3. The athlete must be either a college or pro athlete. I'm not getting involved in a popularity contest concerning a star on a high school or the star of a youth league team.
4. The athlete must be a human being. No animals.
5. We're applying a broad spectrum with a logical slant. That means we're not going to allow poker players, spelling bee champs and pseudo-sports for ESPN promotions and advertisements. I reserve the right to make the call.
6. A person can submit only one list.
7. The star can be in-state, national or international.
Here's what you do:
Compile a list of your favorite sports stars up to a maximum of 10 people. If you don't have 10 but only choose to list three or five, that's fine.
You can submit that list either in the comment portion of this column online or by e-mailing it to
david.mccollum@thecabin.net and put "sports star list" in the subject line.
We'll keep the list active until 9 p.m. Sunday, July 22, then we'll officially close the voting....
