By a vote of 114-93, the measure was shot down, but Proposition 8, which would require student athletes to be enrolled into a private school by grade 7, passed 247-25. If the athlete transfers into a non-public school after their 7th grade year, they will have to sit out of athletics for one full year.

This will never fly unless something is missing. So a student moves from Dallas to Bentonville and enrolls at Shiloh. The student is ineligible if they enroll at Shiloh after the 7th grade?

If that is how it works, then AAA better beef up their legal fund.

Are all sports affected or just football?

Agreed. I thought maybe there was some mileage detail that was being left out. For example, if you move to a private district that is 100+ miles from your previous school, this is waived. But, looking at the AAA's report from the meeting (PDF), it doesn't look like that was included.

Now you're punishing kids who are moving? Maybe we're missing something.

UPDATE: AS360 interviewed PA coach Kevin Kelley and he said "If we have transfers in, they are going to be from out of state. So that doesn't effect them so.. you know... like that."

The people who transfer in after their 7th grade year will be ineligible for 365 days.

As far as the people who move in from out of state, I am not sure, they have not made that clear.

My problem, is that this does not include public schools, make their transfers have to sit 365 days as well.

Absolutely agree, Luke.

How about the public schools, particularly the ones in Pulaski County, play by the same rules?? No recruiting of 8th graders like goes on currently, and none of these silly M to M transfers and magnet schools.

Also...there is an exemption in the transfer rules for a "bona fide" move into a new school district....amazing that the could not come up with some other term. ONLY in the south!!

From the AAA website....
bona fide move from one public school district into the public school district that the student will be attending.

I support all of the public schools in spirit and in checkbook, but they recruit talent for athletics and academics as well. If a young man is really talented in basketball, is it any wonder that they always seem to show up at LR Parkview playing for "the man." The year PA beat Parkview in Barton everyone of our starters had been at PA since the first grade, I had coached them since they were 5 at Penick Boys Club. Parkview had the best talent recruited from the county. Its a fact, LR public schools recruit the hardest, and the private schools do their fair share as well. Joe Adams showed up at PA first, was turned down, and ended up at CAC. Looks like Joe made a good decision.

But oldbear someone has to be the villain. History has shown that it's relatively easy for the majority to pick on the minority. That just means the private schools are always going to have to deal with this type of stuff as long as they keep winning games/championships.
