UCA SUGAR BEARS ADD TWO
CONWAY, Ark. _ The University of Central Arkansas Sugar ars signed two basketball players to NCAA letters of intent on Wednesday.
UCA added Denise Fairbanks from Illinois Central College and Carnisha Bolden from Mississippi Delta Community College.
"We are excited about both of these young ladies and are truly blessed to have them here,’ said UCA head coach Checola Seals-Horton, who led the Sugar Bears to a 14-14 overall record in their first year in NCAA Division I.
Fairbanks, a 6-foot-3 center who will have three years of eligibility remaining, averaged 14 points and 6 rebounds at Illinois Central and shot 53 percent from the field. Fairbanks was a first-team NJCAA All-America and All-Region selection.
“We are very excited that Denise has decided to play basketball for the Sugar Bears,’ said Seals-Horton. “We feel like she will be an excellent addition to our inside game. At 6-3, she can step out and shoot the short jumper and even the three at times, but her aggresiveness and scoring ability around the basket will be key for us next season.
“Denise will be an immediate impact player for us next season and we are thrilled to have her as a part of our program.’
Bolden, a 5-9 point guard, averaged 5 points, 3 rebounds and 5 assists last season at Mississippi Delta, playing for Coach Burnadette McDonald.
“Carnisha’s height at the point guard position will be a positive for us next season,’ said Seals-Horton. “She is a great defender and sees the floor so well. With the loss of (senior point) Renita (Dobbins) we think Carnisha will certainly be able to provide us with height and depth at the point guard postition.”
The Sugar Bears signed six players in the early signing period last fall, including Gravette’s Kayla Britton, Springdale’s Laura Beth Anderson, Jayme Adair of Mt. Vernon, Texas, Kia Lee of Springhill, La., Gwen Delk of Jackson, Tenn., and Meagan Nickell from Tulsa.
The Sugar Bears finished 8-8 in the Southland Conference and tied for second place in the SLC East Division last season.
