Sugar Bears name new basketball coach
Matt Daniel, a former Arkansas High School Basketball Player of the Year, Harding University star and a coach who once led Pulaski Academy's girls to a state championship, has been named the new women's basketball coach at the University of Central Arkansas, succeeding Checola Seals-Horton, who was dismissed in December.

Daniel, 31, is currently the top assistant women's coach and recruiting coordinator at the University of Missouri. UCA athletic director Brad Teague said Daniel will assume some of his duties as soon as arrangements are worked out with Missouri. Teague said Ron Marvel will continue to coach the UCA women until the end of the season. As soon as those arrangements are made, Daniel will begin recruiting for the Sugar Bears.

"Our main need right now is in the recruiting process, but we think we hit a home run with this hire," Teague said. Further details will be available in Saturday's edition of the Log Cabin.

Coach Daniel was on the boy's side of coaching several years before going over to girls at Colorado and the last four years at Mizzou. He played at Colorado until Chauncey Billups showed up (they are great friends) and then transferred to Harding. He was at UT Arlington as a men's coach, after one year with Rob Evans at AZ State. He coached the boys at PA one year (they were beaten in the semi-finals by Marcus Monk ending a 59 game winning streak). He left there when the opportunity became available at Colorado where he was known well from his two year stint there. He is the son of a coach (his dad is the girl's coach at Jonesboro) and he is handsome, articulate, eager to prove himself, a recruiter, and a promoter. I think the Conway community will embrace him.

As many of you will recall, when it was announced last week about the new womens basketball, Dr. Teague said it had not been determined when he would begin work here at UCA.

Brad announced today at Bearbackers that Matt Daniel will offically start work here on Tuesday. He emphasized that Coach Marvel and the assistants will continue till the end of the season. Brad said the new coach will concentrate early on on recruiting.

Sounds like he hits the ground running in the morning at day break.

Very good! No time like the present to get started. Hopefully we will get a head start in the recruiting wars.

Sounds like a good start...... two recruiting classes can get you into the top of the SLC (no insult intended..same goes for most any conference) .....

Daniel's recruiting example for MU......

MU women’s team adds sixth recruit

By the Columbia, MO Tribune’s staff
Published Friday, April 13, 2007
RaeShara’ Brown of Little Rock, Ark., has signed a letter of intent to play for the Missouri women’s basketball team.

Brown is a 5-foot-8 guard who was named the MVP of the Arkansas Class 6A state championship game after she led Parkview High School to its third title in the last four years. She was named all-state all four years and scored more than 1,600 points in her career.

"We are very excited to have Rae Rae join our program," Missouri Coach Cindy Stein said. "The areas that I was most impressed with Rae Rae are her tenacious defense and competitiveness and her ability to find a way to score. She is a natural leader and her versatility at the guard positions is an asset to how we want to play next year. Rae Rae is also an extremely gifted student and takes academics very seriously.

"I would also like to compliment" assistant "coach Matt Daniel for his diligence in recruiting Rae Rae."

This brings Missouri’s total number of signees since the fall period to six. The Tigers’ initial five-member class was rated the 25th-best in the nation and second in the Big 12 according to Blue Star Basketball.
