pregame 6:45 on The Bear 91.3 and UCAsports.com

We are 1-2. Jackson St is 1-1 coming off a 79-39 loss to Alabama last week. Last season JSU beat us 75-58 in Jackson.

Young Sugar Bears making an impact

Quote:
Heading into tonight's game against Jackson State at the Farris Center, University of Central Arkansas Sugar Bear coach Matt Daniel said he is pleased with his freshman-dominated team.

"Statistically, the young ones are getting it done," he said at today's weekly Bearbacker luncheon.

He noted two players in the Southland Conference have had 30-point games this young season and both play for the Sugar Bears, Westin Taylor and Meagan Herbert. Against Ecclesia last week, Taylor hit 10 3-point baskets the second half. UCA officials are currently researching whether anyone in women's Division I basketball had done that in a half.

The Sugar Bears (1-2) play Jackson State at 7 tonight at the Farris Center.

"They beat us by 17 last season; it'll be interesting to see our progress," Daniel said.

The scoring certainly slowed in the second half.
And free throws are once again a struggle (as Desiree makes two)...

No fgs the last 2:37 for the Sugar Bears.
Hopefully the win means that we've gotten a lot better since last year and not just that JSU has gotten worse. Either way, shooting a higher percentage from every spot on the floor is going to have to be a priority. No team should ever shoot 47.4% from the free throw line.

SUGAR BEARS LEAD FROM START TO FINISH IN WIN OVER JACKSON STATE

Quote:
“We lost some focus in the second half,” Daniel said. “This young team getting its first Division I win, they were probably pretty excited. We had too many turnovers and not enough assists, but that’s kind of the way they played us. But we had really good effort. We’ve just got to continue to get better on both ends of the floor.”

Next thing we know, you'll go and bring up how they are just 6-45 on threes the last two games outside of Taylor (who is a damn nice player, by the way).

I don't know that Jackson State is any worse, but their strength this year is guard play instead of athletic forwards – meaning it's a better matchup for the Sugar Bears. Guiden was all over their leading scorer and didn't let her get anything. They couldn't own the glass or get easy shots. Even a lot of what they got was well-defended, they just made some tough shots.

Knock down free throws, fast-break layups and open 3s and that's a 30-something point win. For the most part it was a more dominant performance than the 60-46 final shows. In all I'd chalk it up to us being better. Now just got to work on hitting some more shots.
