The Sugar Bears will try to avoid their first 3 game losing streak of the season, while attempting to win their 1st SLC game of the season at the Farris Center vs. Texas State Saturday afternoon at 2 pm, pregame beginning at 1:45 on The Bear 91.3 and UCAsports.com.

The SBs (10-5, 0-2) suffered their first home loss Wednesday night to SFA, 97-86. Texas State who has lost 3 in a row and now sits at 4-9 overall, is obviously 0-2 in SLC play as well after a pair of 6 point losses to UTA and TAMCC.

Big game for SBs...in spite of poor outing vs TAMCC and TSU close game with TAMCC, this is winnable...home court, edge in player stats among SLC leaders, motivation to bounce back....need a good and loud crowd....

Big win – not just because it's a conference win over a team we'd never beaten before, but just from the psychological standpoint of the whole deal. It'd be easy for a young team to get its head beat in a couple times and start to have some self-doubt. Good to hang one in the W column and break the ice, so to speak.

To go from losing by around 30 twice to 14 last year to getting a 12 point win this year would indicate some progress. And even if Texas State maybe isn't as good as they have been, it sure is nice to be on the way up than be headed the opposite direction.

Good to see that when Herbert is having a rare bad game, somebody is going to pick up the slack. And that "bad game" is a 13-point, 10-rebound game. Unreal. She was only 1 of 8 on two-point shots (probably all of which were right around the basket) and got only two free throws, well below her average. Yet she still gets 13 points because she steps outside and knocks down three 3s. That's a nice option to have.

Nicholls has been a tough out at home the last couple years, would be nice to go down there and steal one. Shoot, just four more wins and this team assures itself of a winning season. Not bad at all ... and sure not 6-23.

Great win for our women's basketball team! Shout out to the Purple Rage who made their season debut. They did a fantastic job as always. This game and this win does a lot of wonders for the team. They go on the road for the next couple of games. Win those games, and the confidence is through the roof. Go Sugar Bears!!!!

I was proud of the way the girls held their composure when the lead was cut to 4 late in the second half. Megan struggled against taller players inside but knocked down huge threes. She is so basketball saavy, it is good for her to struggle, she will figure out how to handle the adversity and get better because of it. Matt kept his composure on the bench, he put us in a position to win by putting shooters in the corners and rolling Megan high to the top of the key to get good looks. The team grade point average was well over 3.00 for the first semester, they know what is expected of them off the court, they handle themselves well in a social setting. Wins and loses will always be the primary measuring stick but it makes me so proud to have real student athletes that want to represent their university in a positive way and conduct themselves like young ladies on (a little mean and tough is ok girls!) and off the court.

ROGERS SCORES 28 AS REBOUNDS, FREE THROWS LEAD SUGAR BEARS PAST BOBCATS
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL • Jan 16, 2010

CONWAY — Central Arkansas dominated on the boards, at the free throw line and turned in a solid defensive effort as they defeated Texas State 79-67 for their first Southland Conference victory of the season and their first-ever win over the Bobcats.

“It was a great team effort and I’m proud of our defense more than anything else,” UCA head coach Matt Daniel said. “How we played on the defensive end of the floor was important and we were a lot more intense. I can’t emphasize how pleased I am with our attitude and effort for 40 minutes today. This may be as big a win as we’ve had all year long because of bouncing back within conference and protecting our home floor. I’m just really pleased with our overall team effort.”...

Rogers, Guiden combine for 50 in Sugar Bear victory
Posted: January 16, 2010 - 10:24pm
By David McCollum

With the boat spring some leaks Saturday, the University of Central Arkansas Sugar Bears’ defense kept things afloat, Desiree Rogers and Nakeia Guiden provided some extra power — and Megan Herbert and Westin Taylor, sputtering with their shooting, got into gear at a perfect time.

As a result, the Sugar Bears (11-5, 1-2) halted a two-game losing streak with a 79-67 victory over Texas State at the Farris Center...

Thanks! It's good to be at a game after a few months off from not playing at an athletic event of any kind. We're about twice the size we normally are so the cheering (and heckling) should be better than ever!

I was pretty impressed overall with the pep band – both in terms of size (about 60 or so strong ... impressive) and quality. They make a big difference in terms of atmosphere – feels more like a collegiate sporting event. With their positioning right behind the opponent's 2nd-half basket, they've got the opportunity to have an impact. I particularly liked marching the horns down to the front to blast it at the opponent's huddle during the timeout. Nice touch.

My one gripe (well, two ... no band participation at all during the Zombie Nation in the second half Saturday. Pipe up, folks!) is that they just aren't there enough. It would be nice to see them before the season is half over. I know other schools have some sort of pep band at games from the beginning of the season. They might miss a few games over the break or whatever, but they don't just completely ignore basketball until the spring semester.
