After the Sugar Bears rallied in the second half to defeat Northwestern State on Saturday to stay tied for first in the Southland East, UCA coach Matt Daniel said he was “as proud now as I have been all year long,” of his team, now 18-6.
He cited some statistics:
• The 12-win turnarounds this season is the biggest improvement in the nation in Division I this season and the third biggest turnaround in Southland Conference history with four games to go.
• The Sugar Bears, at 13-1, have the most home wins in the league.
• Meagan Herbert, who had her string of consecutive double-doubles stopped Saturday at 23, is 15 away from the SLC record for free-throws made. She leads the nation in total rebounding and is in the top 10 in scoring.
• Westin Taylor has hit the most 3-pointers ever for the Sugar Bears in a Division I season.
• Seven different players, all freshmen or sophomores, have combined for 72 double-digit scoring performances.
Herbert’s double-double streak ended Saturday (eight points, 13 rebounds) in a large part because she sat out 16 minutes of the first half because of foul trouble.
“She gets two fouls in the first four minutes, then didn’t foul the rest of the game,” said Daniel. “If I had know that, I wouldn’t have taken her out.”
