TV game possibility for Sugar Bears

By David McCollum

University of Central Arkansas Sugar Bear coach Matt Daniel said Monday that the Southland Conference is considering televising the UCA-Stephen F. Austin women's game on March 3 as its wild-card game on its television package.

The game will decide the SLC East title.

"This would be big for two factors," Daniel said Monday at the weekly Bearbacker luncheon. It's a televised women's game, which doesn't happen a whole lot in our league. It's could be a women's televised game they didn't plan for. That speaks a lot for what we are trying to do."

The Sugar Bears, at 19-6, have made the biggest turnaround so far in Division I from the previous season.

SLC officials should decide by mid-week whether to televise the game, which will be at Nacogdoches, Texas.

That's great news, I enjoy watching the sugar bears more than I ever have liked watching the men's team. For some reason they always play better basketball for at least the last decade. I will definitely catch this game if its a go.

Is there a bigger basketball game on 3/3 for SLC than UCA/SFA?

I missed most of the SugarBears glory days as I lived out of state. However, the Bears of my younger days played fine basketball then had even better teams in late 80s and early 90s. We can be solid in basketball in both men's and women's.

Very proud of SBs this season to see what they have accomplished.

The women's wild card game will pit the top two teams in the West Division. At 10-2, the Lady Cardinals have the best overall record in either Division, one game better than the Islanders, who are one of three 9-3 teams in the conference. Central Arkansas and Stephen F. Austin are tied atop the East Division standings with the same 9-3 record. The four teams remain in the hunt for the top seed in the 2010 State Farm Southland Conference Basketball Tournament, March 9-13, in Katy, Texas. The telecast for the Lamar vs. A&M-Corpus Christi game will begin at 7 p.m., CST, with tipoff scheduled for 7:05 p.m.

Maybe they are trying to make up for the snub in football?
