That's a pretty good accomplishment to get an invite to a tournament in the first year out of the transition. Beating McNeese and getting the NCAA berth would've obviously been a great deal - but since that didn't happen, it's still nice to be part of a national postseason tournament. And it's kind of neat that it was on an invite, not some automatic selection. They could've chosen a lot of other teams, but found the Sugar Bears to be one of the 16 most attractive options for their tournament. Nice recognition.

It's also a chance for more games and practices, which is usually a good thing with a young team.

Corpus won two games in it last year and lost to Memphis in the semifinals. Having that kind of success would push this year's record to 23-12, which looks pretty good. Not nearly as good as 25-11, though.

Women's NIT has 64 teams so after the NCAA Championship bracket that puts the Sugar Bears somewhere between 129-144 in the nation. Not bad for first year of eligibility.

LCD article by David McCollum.

"The complete field will be announced Monday night after the NCAA Women’s Selection Show. UCA officials have set up a celebration and announcement party beginning at 5:45 p.m. at Centennial Valley Golf and Athletic Club."

Hey – it couldn't have happened without some help from the Cowgirls! Y'all made it happen. Thanks ... I guess.

Would be nice to see all three Southland teams enjoy some success in their respective postseason tournaments if only to garner a little respect for the league. McNeese will obviously have the toughest go of it. ESPN's Bracketology has the Cowgirls slotted for a 14-3 matchup vs. 27-4 Miami right now. That'd be pretty rough, but still better than being a 15-16 and going up against UCONN, Baylor, Tennessee, Stanford, A&M, Duke, UCLA or Xavier.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL INVITATIONAL SELECTS SUGAR BEARS FOR TOURNEY
3/13/2011 8:39:11 PM

CONWAY — In their first year eligible for NCAA Division I postseason play, Central Arkansas narrowly missed out on the NCAA Tournament – losing to McNeese State in the championship game of the Southland Conference Tournament.

But the Sugar Bears' season is still alive.

UCA was notified on Sunday that the Sugar Bears are one of 16 teams that have been selected to appear in the Women's Basketball Invitational, putting them in a national postseason tournament in their first year out of the Division I reclassification period.

"It's an unbelievable accomplishment and speaks volumes about what this program is doing this early in Division I," said UCA head coach Matt Daniel. "This, on top of everything else we've been able to achieve over the last two seasons, is another indicator that we've got a pretty good deal going. I hope this thing can gain momentum within our community and create an environment like we have never seen every time we take the floor in the Farris Center for years to come. Congratulations to the University, the Conway community and the state. Central Arkansas is officially on the national map of women's college basketball."...
