Megan goes scoreless from the field and we still win. That says quite a lot about the talent level of this team. Not putting the horse behind the cart but that - plus "the come to Jesus" halftime "talks" by coach Matt - doesn't bode well for some of our opponents this year. Expectations are high this year. No reason not to be as long as the injury bug stays away.

Told extended family that Sugar Bears beat Indiana. Comment, UCA plays Indiana?
Way to go Sugar Bears! A great day for UCA!

I mentioned the they were playing Indiana last night in a big group of friends. They had the same response. "The Hoosiers?" Yep. That Indiana.

Told them about Tuesday's game with Alabama in Conway too.

Good win. Hopefully we have the same excitement in the stadium today from the fans.

Huge win for the school, the girls, and Matt. I loved the set play after the timeout with a tough, hard screen for Westin popping out for the three that put us up 8. Matt can really coach. He has a lot of talented players who all want to play. He does a good job of "team, team, team". All the girls were pulling for each other, there did not seem to be anything other than a combined effort to win. Thank you girls!!!

SUGAR BEARS SHOOT PAST HOOSIERS IN FRONT OF RECORD CROWD
11/11/2011 10:31:00 PM
CONWAY — Welcome back, Westin Taylor.

The Central Arkansas junior forward, in her first game back after an ACL tear late last season, drilled 5-of-7 from 3-point range in the second half to propel the Sugar Bears to a 58-46 season-opening win over Indiana in front of a school record crowd of 3,450 in the Farris Center Friday night.

"That was a great win in front of a great crowd and a tremendous way to start off the season," said fourth-year head coach Matt Daniel. "I don't know what's going to happen down the line, but right now the Sugar Bears are 1-0."

UCA (1-0) got off to a slow start and trailed 22-18 at the half, but outscored the Hoosiers (0-1) 40-24 in the second period on the strength of 61.5 percent shooting from the 3-point line – going 8-for-13, the bulk of it coming from Taylor.

"We battled," Daniel said. "We knew the game wasn't going to get out of hand either way because of the way Indiana plays. We picked up the tempo, got into the teeth of the defense and things opened up. We had a great shooter in the corner and she did a good job."

Sugar Bears find range in upset win over Indiana
Posted: November 11, 2011 - 10:59pm
By Mark Burke

After seeing her first attempt miss, University of Central Arkansas sharp-shooter Westin Taylor was anticipating a somewhat sluggish performance.

Instead, she made six of her next seven 3-point shots in her first game back from injury and helped the Sugar Bears upset Big 10-member Indiana 58-46 in front of a record 3,450 fans at the Farris Center in the season opener for both teams. The Hoosiers (0-1) are the biggest name team to come to the Farris Center and seemed to have no match for Taylor’s performance.

“When I got in, I missed my first shot and was like, ‘Crap, this is going to be a long night,’” Taylor said. “But (teammate Destinee Rogers) told me she was going to keep feeding me the ball, and I hit some shots and got into a zone. It just feels great.”...

Very good first game. Well played by both teams. We gave up 5+ inches at every position but we were much quicker. Does anyone play harder than Des Rogers? She is always the shortest player on the court and at one time she was covering the 6'6 girl and giving her fits. Herbert had double coverage every time and Duever really got inside to get some great rebounds and a couple of put backs. All of the ladies played hard and had their moments....however, you could see the pure joy on Taylor's face when she hit that first 3 and then 4 more...Matt was smiling like he had just won the NCAAs just watching her. Great to have her back able to play.

First win ever over Big 10 team???

Congrats to the ladies on a fine opening game.

Hoosiers Fall on the Road at Central Arkansas
Sasha Chaplin had a double-double night with 13 points and 10 rebounds in the effort.

CONWAY, Ark. - The Indiana women's basketball team dropped a tough one on the road at Central Arkansas on Friday night, 58-46. After missing the majority of last season, IU's Sasha Chaplin achieved a double-double with a team-leading 13 points and 10 rebounds. Jasmine McGhee finished with 12 points and eight boards.

Indiana (0-1) jumped out to an early 4-0 lead after a field goal from Georgie Jones and an Andrea Newbauer drive to the lane and layup. Central Arkansas (1-0) fired back scoring five straight to take their first lead of the game, 5-4, at the 16:00 mark of the first half.

IU silenced the Sugar Bear run with a lay in by Chaplin. McGhee then nailed a jumper and Chaplin again connected from underneath to cap a 6-0 Hoosier run and secure a 10-5 Indiana lead with 11:26 remaining in the half.

Both teams traded buckets throughout the remainder of the opening stanza until the score read 18-15 in favor of UCA with 5:33 remaining. The Hoosiers would shut down Central Arkansas for the rest of the half as IU put together a 7-0 run capped by an Aulani Sinclair 3-point field goal in the final seconds to take a 22-18 advantage into the locker room.

Indiana kept the scoring momentum going with two quick field goals to begin the second half with jumpers from Chaplin and Linda Rubene. Indiana then built its lead to 30-21 on another Rubene field goal with 14:20 remaining.

The tide then began to turn as UCA put together an 11-0 run fueled by three-consecutive 3-point field goals to take the lead, 32-30, with 9:51 on the clock. Milika Taufa rebounded her own miss for a put back lay in to quiet the Sugar Bear momentum for a moment and tie the game.

That would be the last tie of the game as Central Arkansas' outside shooting was just too much as UCA shot 61.5-percent (8-of-13) in the second half to pull away for the home victory.

Indiana outrebounded the Sugar Bears, 40-31 and shot 40.7-percent (22-of-54) from the field. Chaplin, to go along with her double-double performance, added two blocks and two steals.

The Hoosiers will return to Bloomington for their home opener on Monday, Nov. 14 against Murray State. The Game will tip at 7 p.m. ET at Assembly Hall.

Game Notes
