McCollum's Column: Both Sugar Bears and their coach attract gazes

By David McCollum

There was uncertainty about which was the most glaring statement at the Farris Center on Tuesday night: The University of Central Arkansas Sugar Bears’ double-digit win over Alabama or coach Matt Daniel’s bright purple velvet blazer that would not have terribly been out of place in a display case at Graceland.

Both were fashion statements on different levels.

The Sugar Bears drew attention to themselves, both statewide and nationally with their second straight 58-46 victory over a Division I team from a major conference (Indiana and Alabama).

And neither the Sugar Bears or their fans had no problem locating Daniel along the sideline. “Dazzle Daze” came early to Conway.

It was certainly cause for celebration and worthy of a benchmark that the two biggest-name basketball teams to play in the Farris Center were sent home with double-digit defeats...

David always has interesting articles...really the only sports journalist in the state.

Matt is right on about creating an environment that is both stimualting to our ladies and distracting to the visitors. We had that many times in the 70s for the men in the old gym. We are plenty big now to put 3000 per game in the FC and let the Purple Rage rock and roll and the fans make a lot of noise.

The Indiana coach apparently was impressed with the environment just like the UAB coach.

The only downside is that the "big conference "" teams are less likely to ever come to the FC in the future.
