The 12-4, 2-1 Sugar bears take the long winding road...again...to Thibodaux, LA, this time to take on a 9-7, 2-1 Nicholls State Lady Colonel squad who is very much improved, and very dangerous on their home floor. Tipoff from beautiful Stopher Gym is set for 6:30 on Wednesday night, with pregame beginning on The Bear 91.3 and UCAsports.com starting at 6:10.

SUGAR BEARS NO. 17 IN POLL; SQUARE OFF AGAINST NICHOLLS TONIGHT
1/18/2012 8:43:00 AM

THIBODAUX, La. — Following Saturday's 84-43 win over Northwestern State, Central Arkansas (which has won four of its last five games) enters Wednesday night's game at Nicholls ranked No. 17 in the latest Mid-Major Top 25 poll.

Green Bay and Delaware remain at the top two spots, with Florida Gulf Coast overtaking Gonzaga for No. 3. Princeton rounds out the top five. Green Bay (11), Delaware (16) and Gonzaga (25) are all ranked in the ESPN/USA Today Coaches Poll.

The Sugar Bears (12-4, 2-1) continue Southland Conference play tonight on the road at 6:30 against an improved Nicholls State team that comes in with a 9-7 overall record and a 2-1 conference mark.

The Colonels have already matched their highest win total since 2002-03, and will be shooting for their first 10-win season in a decade after going 11-16 in 2001-02. If they are to get there tonight, they'll have to do so against a Sugar Bear team that has won the last four meetings and leads the series 8-2 overall. After a runaway 91-56 win in Conway last January, the Sugar Bears followed with a 68-53 win over the Colonels in Thibodaux in February led by Megan Herbert's 25 points and 20 rebounds...

FINAL
UCA 23-43=66
Nicholls State 39 -20=59

Never hurts to hit 17 of 19 FTs while your opponent only does 6 for 6.

Megan put in on them.....18 points in 35 minutes with 17 rebounds and 7 for 7 FTs....plus had Micah had 16 and Nakeia had 17 (9 of 10 FTs) ...Des put in 10....

Coach: Looks like we had a 12 hour bus ride here....cannot say enough about the 2nd half defense....our 2nd half was a little bit better than their 1st half.....Nicholls played well and have a good team....hope we have an environment at home vs Lamar.

This team just never gives up...they have the confidence to come back no matter.

UCA 13-4/3-1

Next is Lamar at the FC on Saturday. Hope fopr a BIG crowd to welcome the Cardinals.

Megan did what she usually does, maybe even better than normal in the first half.

But, Micah was the 2nd half star in my opinion. She caught fire from 3pt range and the 3pter to cut it to 2 followed by the fast-break layup to tie it 20 seconds later was just so huge. Even though Nicholls took the lead back after that, she'd swung the momentum so far in our advantage that you had to feel like we were going to win it at that point. And there were still four minutes left. When she hit the three to put us up by 5 with a minute left... Wow.

Nakeia had a bad night from the floor, but a great night from the line.

Strange night. You go 0-for-8 from 3pt range in the first half only to take even shots from out there in the second half. Micah didn't take any in the first half and was still the only one with any success in the 2nd, but glad she kept shooting them!

Pretty good assessment Trey. I really didn't think we played too terrible in the 1st half, it's just we could never get any momentum going because Nicholls was making all their shots it seemed like. We made mistakes, but I really thought Nicholls really deserved to be leading at the half.

Our 2-3 zone gave them fits and they FINALLY quit hitting shots. Had they kept hitting shots at the rate they were, the comeback wouldve never been possible. But Micah's shooting, and the way we dominated the glass in the 2nd half, and the free throw line too all combined to make that one enjoyable comeback...

SUGAR BEARS RALLY FROM 17 DOWN TO WIN AT NICHOLLS
1/18/2012 10:09:00 PM

THIBODAUX, La. — In the first half of Wednesday night's game, Nicholls State could not miss.

In the second half, they could not win.

After an abysmal first half in which Central Arkansas shot 0 for 8 from beyond the arc and dug themselves a 16-point hole, the Sugar Bears made a furious second-half rally and outscored the Colonels 43-20 to pull out a big 66-59 come-from-behind victory at Stopher Gymnasium.

"We proved to be resilient," said UCA head coach Matt Daniel. "I can't tell you enough about that second half of basketball. It was impressive on both ends of the floor, and we did it with a zone against a 3-point shooting team. We just bowed our necks and were able to get it done."

Megan Herbert had 10 points and 11 rebounds in the second half en route to 18 and 17 total, and Micah Rice had all 16 of her points as the Sugar Bears (13-4, 3-1 Southland) stymied the Colonels ((9-8, 2-2) and escaped with their fifth straight win over Nicholls...

Sugar Bears pull away from Nicholls

Central Arkansas found its intensity at halftime, and Nicholls State couldn't match it in the second half.

Everything went right for the Colonels in the first half of Wednesday's Southland Conference game in Stopher Gym. Nicholls outworked, outplayed and outshot the Sugar Bears dominating the first half in building a 16-point halftime lead.

Central Arkansas came out in the second half and flipped the script on the Colonels.

It was Central Arkansas outworking, outplaying and outrebounding Nicholls, and that intense effort led to a 66-59 victory for the Sugar Bears.

Nicholls coach "DoBee" Plaisance said she warned her team at halftime that Central Arkansas was going to come out with more intensity, but her team didn't heed her warning...
