Some close calls in these exhibition games against LSC Div II foes...

SLC favorite Lamar fell to a nationally-ranked Div II Tarleton State in Beaumont 65-62.

The 'Cats however escaped the Texans' conference foe and LSC bottom-feeder, Angelo St 74-71 in San Marcos. SHSU plays Angelo St tonight at the Coliseum.

UTA knocked off Incarnate Word 74-52. ULM rolled Hendrix. McNeese plays a very good LSU-Shreveport tonight in Sulphur. SFA plays A&M-Commerce tonight. UTSA plays Concordia this weekend.

Just a note, Hendrix is D-III.

I do not think there is that much of gap in talent, primarily because of the transfer rules afforded D-II. In fact there are probably several instances of a higher level D-II program actually having more talent than a lower level D-I.

That is the challenge facing us in our transitions, being able to recruit players as good or better than what we have had for the last couple of years with D-I eligibility requirements.

It looks like we are off to a good start with the men and the women's team should not present a problem.

I doubt there's much, if any, disparity between the GSC and SLC. The GSC has been littered with transfers from the likes of UConn, George Washington, Indiana State, Virginia, Arkansas State, Oregon State, Memphis, UNC-Charlotte, etc – so there's not a dearth of talent by any means.

UA-Monticello, who lost its last six conference games a year ago, went up to Rutgers near season's end and only lost by seven or so, and they had, if I recall correctly, beaten Arkansas State in an exhibition in the pre-season.

HUGE gap in baseball for sure, and for those not keeping count at home, Sam Houston just went to Mizzou and beat them on their home court on tv. And did it by no fluke, Sam Houston was the better team, and I can say that because I am forced to see Mizzou constantly up here.

Helluva win! Kats have come so close to knocking off some major non-conference opponents...

Drexel is next and then a date with Duke at MSG? We'll worry about Drexel first...
