The University of Central Arkansas Bears are expected to sign at least two basketball players today, both junior college guards, but the UCA coaches are also working hard on big men.

Brooks Taylor, a junior college transfer who tied Mitch Rueter as the second-leading scorer with an 11.7 average, has left the team according to a mutual agreement between him and Chappell.

Marcus Pillow, the Bears' leading scorer with an 11.8 average and the career 3-point leader, has informed the coaching staff of his desire to transfer to Arkansas Tech.

Nothing is definite yet about Pillow. UCA coaches are recruiting guards, and they're targeting a couple whom they think can be of immediate help and Southland Confernce quality.

Daniels is a 6-foot, 175-pound guard originally from Albuquerque, N.M. who averaged 10.7 points and 5 assists last year at Olney. His team went 20-10 last season. He was at Drake two years ago when the Bulldogs won the Missouri Valley Conference championship and made the NCAA Tournament.

Poellnitz, rated the No. 25 juco player in the nation by ESPN heading into last season, is a 6-3, 200-pound guard who averaged 15.7 points and shot 54 percent from the field and 39 percent from three-point range as a freshman at Iowa Western. He was named second-team All-Region. He battled injuries as a sophomore and played in only 15 games last season.

Sounds like a couple of good pick-ups for the Bears...let's hope they can get something done!

They are gambling on Poellnitz. Let's hope he can stay healthy.

That's kinda what I was thinking too Monkey. Taking a big risk with a two year player with a recent injury. Hopefully he will be a 100% by the start of next season.

Ryan Daniels (Albuquerque, N.M.)

After transferring from Drake University, Daniels had a terrific season for the Blue Knights, averaging 10.6 points and a team-high 4.7 assists per game.

OCC’s floor general shot 40 percent from the field (90-of-226), 45 percent from long range (62-of-137) and 78 percent from the foul line (110-of-141).

“Our point-guard play was erratic before Ryan got here,” Burris said. “He brought toughness every day and was our glue guy. Ryan took care of the basketball and often times guarded the other team’s best player.”

Daniels is also drawing interest from several four-year schools.

The Patterson School is one of the best programs in the country.
They were #2 in the nation when Poellnitz was there.

One site I found says that he was a 3-star on Rivals and 1-star on Scout.
ESPN had him as the #68 PG in 2007.

At our level, if you can get a guy like Poellintz you take that risk every time.

I'd rather have a guy like that who, if healthy, seems to be the type who could make a big impact instead of taking a guy with no injury history who might be just healthy and talented enough to sit on the bench and not contribute jack squat for four years.

The No. 25 JUCO player in the country typically ain't coming to a 10-19 transitional team unless there's some factor that kept bigger fish from biting. In this case it was that he fell off a lot of teams' radar because he was out with a broken foot or whatever.

Without having seen the guy play and going strictly off what's been written about him, I'd say this is a steal for us. I like the way the backcourt shapes up if he and Pouncy are both healthy. Of course, that's a good sized if. But at least it's something to look forward to.

I still think a healthy Pouncy last season would have swung 4-5 games .....add these new guys to the returnees and have them all healthy and you have some great foundation pieces for a pretty good team......hate to see Pillow leave and not get his senior season in.....

We didn't get any taller with these two though. We have a HUGE hole to fill in the middle.

I noticed that as well. On the current roster we don't have any players that are officially listed as Centers, and our tallest players are only 6'8" (Chris Henson and Chris Brown).

Big men are hard to find. To get one that can walk and chew gum at the same time is difficult to do at the mid-major level, in particular a transitional mid-major.
