The other thread is getting too big, so I thought I would start a new one.

I'll be the first to admit that I am a little skeptical of this hire, but I will also be the first to clear my previous hold-ups and wish him the best of luck! I am very interested to see the rest of his staff, and the type of talent that he will be able to bring to UCA. I'm not going to expect a miraculous turnaround right out of the gate, but I do hope to see at least some steady progress in the right direction.

With that being said, welcome to UCA Coach Williamson! GO BEARS!!

One thing I took from those articles that I really like is this quote from Teague ...

Quote:
“It comes down to things that go beyond a basketball court. He wants be be an example and to lead young men. He wants to work hard and teach discipline and respect and he wants to do it with high school recruits. He wants to graduate student-athletes and teach them how to be productive alumni and good citizens. It’s about core values. He cares out young men and what they become"

That is encouraging and a breath of fresh air.

Being an "old guy", I can appreciate that Corliss does emphasize the importance of teaching the kids something about life after basketball. Xs and Os, Ws and Ls are important to the program but the lessons learned by the players themselves about life itself might even be of more importance to these kids. Practically all of us at some point in our early lives turned to some other adult other than our own parents for advice. Good to see that Corliss recognizes and accepts the challenge of wanting to be a mentor as well as a coach.

I heard on the radio this morning that Corliss had broken down videos of some of the mens games this year before his hire. Wow. I wonder how long this was in the works...or is he just that prepared for any possibility!

I think Brad has had Corliss on his radar for a while. When Dickey and Pennell could not become candidates, Brad immediately interviewed Corliss and he obviously knocked the interview out big time. I think everyone else was measured against Corliss from that point forward and for BT, they just did not measure up. Corliss talked about investing in young people and making a difference in a community and a university by impacting one student at a time. I believe in all of that stuff.

We had Big 12 and SEC folks wanting this job + several others but Brad has a feeling about this hire. Surely the kids are excited and I bet/hope/expect that we will be impressed on the coaching/discipline/attitude/character issues.

Ask Corliss about the rules in his house while growing up about grades and athletics.

James Dickey apparently on radar screen as assistant at uaf.

From the Sacramento Bee:

Quote:
• Corliss Williamson was named the new men's basketball coach at Central Arkansas, which comes as no surprise to those who coached the man when he was with the Kings. Central Arkansas is the school that produced Scottie Pippen.

DMc's column in today's LCD

Buffet of tasks welcomes Williamson in first week

Corliss Williamson had a full plate waiting as he began his first day on campus Monday as University of Central Arkasnas’ new men’s basketball coach.

“It was more like a buffet,” he said, chuckling. “There was logistics, meeting people, learning the campus, more meetings about NCAA regulations and retention, meeting players, planning recruiting. It was like being in a hurricane. My head was spinning all day. Dr. (athletic director) Brad Teague called later in the day to see how I was doing. I told him I would feel better once my head had a chance to reset.”
