Williamson gets coaching shot in home state.Time generally has a way of dimming the star power of college superstars from yesteryear, but a player who delivers a championship to his home-state school often is an exception to the rule.
Corliss Williamson, who led Arkansas to a national title in 1994, is back in his home state as coach at Central Arkansas.
Central Arkansas athletic director Brad Teague learned that lesson as he prepared to interview Corliss Williamson for his fledgling Division I program's coaching vacancy earlier this year. Williamson was walking toward their meeting place when Teague saw two elderly women approach the man who helped lead Arkansas to the 1994 national title.
"As soon as he got out on the street, one of the ladies said, 'Oh, Corliss, we love you. You're so good for this state,' " Teague said. "I teased him later for staging that."
Of course, Williamson hadn't staged anything. He had long since captured the hearts of this entire state -- and he would soon win over Teague in the same manner.
