On Wednesday, they will push it up another notch when they take on the Runnin’ Rebels of UNLV, ranked No. 19 in the nation in one poll and 20th in another. UNLV has played in four of the past five NCAA Tournaments.
“This will be a big test for our guys,’ said UCA head coach Corliss Williamson. “They have a very talented team and are a very storied program. We’ll have to play well and play with some energy against one of the top programs in the country.’
UNLV is 13-2 this season, with wins over No. 1 North Carolina and No. 19 Illinois. The only losses were to Wichita State (89-70) and No. 14 Wisconsin (62-51), both on the road. The Runnin’ Rebels are 8-0 at home this season in the Thomas & Mack Center under first-year coach Dave Rice. UNLV plays at Hawaii on Saturday.
UCA, after winning five straight games, has now lost three consecutive road games. The most recent was a week ago at Drake when the Bears dropped an 87-64 decision to the Drake Bulldogs. In that game, UCA overcame a 25-point deficit and got within 12 points with three minutes remaining.
Senior guard Dewan Clayborn continued his hot hand from the perimeter, making 4 of 6 three-pointers. UCA actually shot better from three-point range (7 of 17, 41.2 percent) than overall (35.8 percent).
The Runnin’ Rebels have a potent perimeter game as well. They made 12 three-pointers against Morgan State, 13 against North Carolina and a season-high 14 against Louisiana Monroe, making 14 of 23 (61 percent).
UNLV also features one of the top rebounders in the nation in Mike Moser, who is ninth in the nation (11.2) after transferring from UCLA. Moser had a season-high 20 rebounds in the season opener against Grand Canyon.
Tipoff is 9 p.m. (CST) at Jerry Tarkanian Court. "
