BIG 3-0: SUGAR BEARS EXTEND STREAK AT LAMAR

Quote:
BEAUMONT, La. - With a three-set sweep over Lamar on Thursday night, the University of Central Arkansas volleyball team extended their Southland Conference winning streak to 30 matches. The Sugar Bears (18-6, 8-0 SLC) topped the Lady Cardinals (8-10, 4-3 SLC) 25-23, 25-21, 25-20 at McDonald Gym to preserve the longest conference winning streak in the country.

"This is another big win on the road," said UCA head coach Steven McRoberts. "I'm proud of the team and the way we fought tonight in a tough environment against the second place team on our side. Lamar has done well at home the last few years.

"We are now three and a half games up on our side in trying to win the east for third straight year. Tonght's win could go a long way to get a high seed in the conference tournament."
Leading the way for UCA was sophomore middle blocker Taylor Hammonds who connected on 13 kills and made no attack errors on 16 attempts. Her .812 hitting percentage was the second best mark in Sugar Bear history and the highest percentage since UCA moved to NCAA Division I in 2006.

I know that Chloe Smith has received a lot of attention for her time here - and deservedly so - but that team is just loaded with talent in every class. So when Chloe leaves us after this year as the most decorated player in history, I really don't think we'll take any steps backward.

Hays and Curl are juniors.
Hammonds is a sophomore.
And Nagy and Collins are just freshman.

That program is solid and continuing to get better in my opinion.

I agree as to talent but when Chloe steps on the court the intensity picks up.....she seems to inspire her teammates....

SLC POTW

Quote:
Offensive Player of the Week - Emma Ridley - Texas A&M-Corpus Christi
Ridley helped the Islanders to a 2-0 mark on the week, evening the Islanders to 4-4 in Southland play and equaling their conference wins total from the past two seasons combined. Against, Nicholls, the Phoenix, Ariz. (Sunnyslope), native, recorded 25 kills and 20 digs for her second 20-20 match of the season. She added four block assists against the Colonels. Against Southeastern Louisiana, Ridley added a match-high 17 kills and three service aces as the Islanders swept the Lions. She hit .387 in the match and totaled a .279 hitting percentage for the weekend.

Honorable Mention: Jessica Hays, Central Arkansas; Carli Kolbe, Sam Houston State; Amanda Aguilera, UT Arlington; Whitney Walls, UTSA; AJ Watlington, Texas State.

Defensive Player of the Week - Kaylee Hawkins, Sam Houston State
Hawkins produced a season-best 33 digs in Sam Houston State's five set victory at UT Arlington on Saturday. In a four set loss to Texas State, the Dickinson, Texas (Dickinson), native, notched 18 digs, bringing her week average to 5.67 dig per set.

Honorable Mention: Cristin Curl, Central Arkansas; Alicia Shaffer, UT Arlington; Kelsey Jewasko, UTSA; Micah Nolan, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi; Danielle Sanchou, Texas State.

Honorable mentions...AGAIN!!

All I have to say is that this girls better get some serious recognition when the Player of the Year awards roll around!

Winning as a team is more important than individual honors. I know what you're saying but playing past the end of the regular season is what it's all about. I'd imagine there's plenty of girls on teams in the SLC that would be more than happy to trade their PotW titles to be where the Sugar Bears are at this point.

I would also like to see the ladies win some of the POW awards but I believe they are focused on a greater goal, that being SLC Conference and SLC Tournament Champions. If that is accomplished they would become the 1st team from UCA to make a NCAA Division 1 Tournament if I'm not mistaken. I believe this team to be the epitome of team excellence and wish them continued success.

And this week, we didn't have any players with a combined 42 kills and a percentage better than .279.

(Nagy's percentage is higher, but she only had 29 attacks all week.)

I went and looked at the Corpus stats. It looks like Emma Ridley IS their offense. I don't know that this is a record, but it has to be close. In a 4-set match last week, Ridley had 73 attacks. That certainly helps in getting to 25 kills.

Stats become harder to come by when you have a deep team and don't play may 5-set matches. I suspect we will have a large representation on the all-conference teams at the end.
